| Shunt diet Greetings!I have 3 shunt yorkies all of whom have not and will not be getting surgery. I need to change thier diet as they have stopped eating the food that they normally do. I need info. My vet doesnt know too much on home made food for shunt dogs. Any advice would be so helpful. Thank you in advance!

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | I'm so sorry all three of your fur babies have Liver Shunt. Try doing a search on "Liver Shunt" as there has been lots posted.

| Dr. Center recommends vegatarian and dairy protein for liver compromised dogs...No meat or fish protein...In my experience, it's important to feed low purine foods as well...

| Are they LS (one large shunt) or MVD (multiply small shunts)? Are they on any supplements? Watermelon and apple (no peels) are good for them to eat.....will they eat egg whites as a protein source? There are also veggie dog foods that you can buy for them.... What did they normally eat?

| Here's Dr. Center's tofu diet: 1 lb tofu, 2 lbs cottage cheese, 4 cups cooked rice, 6 T safflower oil, 1 tsp salt substitute, 6 tsp dicalcium phosphate, 1-1 tsp pectin. Can use a strong low salt cheese to flavor. (Center S. A., Reynolds, A., College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 14853). |

| http://www.homevet.com/petcare/docum...veranddiet.pdf This is incredibly helpful. I know there's a lot of medical info in here, but it's so informative for those who have dogs with liver disease. Give a copy of this to your vet. It was written by Dr. Center is one of the leading experts in liver disease. Since your dogs are symptomatic, I think it's imperative that you get them off of any diet that may contain animal proteins...They produce the most amount of ammonia and in a dog with a compromised liver, the ammonia builds up and enters the bloodstream causing more and more severe symptoms and damage over time. Are they on prescription diets or are you homecooking?
