| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I don't know.....! I just keep hearing about Cosequin and I worry I'm not giving him the best he could have. ![]() Here are some okay prices on Cosequin: Cosequin Regular Capsules 90 Caps 0330 PetMarket.com And it looks like the comparison, if I was to start Wylie, in ingredients is: Glucosamine HCl 250 mg Sodium Chondroitin 200 mg Ascorbate 16 mg Manganese 2 mg So then, why not just look for something w/ a comparable Glu/Chond ratio, you know?

Some ingredients have been shown to be effective while others (like the green lipped muscle I think it is) doesn't have studies backing its effectiveness. http://www.nutramaxlabs.com/Brochure...20Brochure.pdf Since dogs don't absolutely need to be supplemented with Vitamin C and giving too much vitamin A is dangerous, it would be okay with me if they left those things out. I would hesitate to give Ellie more vitamin A than is already in her homecooking supplement. It probably isn't enough to do harm but I'm confused why it would be in there at all.

| Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Morgan and Mylie both have LPs (mylie also has the repaired elbows) and i rarely given them a joint supplement now a days. I used to give straight gluco/chondrot capsules for people but they cant be split properly to get accurate amounts in each piece (like heartworm pills). I've been told (and have researched) that if on a prey-model raw diet you don't need to supplement. you can give chicken feet, beef trachea, and...something else...forgot.... these things are made of a lot of cartilage which is a good natural source of gluco/chondrot.

| Shelby has had surgery on both back legs, and she is taking Glucosamine Condroitin. The Physical therapist suggested that she take it everyday... and her vet agrees. (sorry, I know that this is POST not pre surgery.... but I think that it may be beneficial)

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Ohhhhh...so are you saying it might be the SOURCE of the glucosamine that determines the extent of it's effectiveness, is that it? If so, that's interesting!! Wow. Is that right?

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | OKAY - just read the whole brochure - I GET IT. We're switching to COSEQUIN. I would like to see the published studies though - so, I'm calling them tomorrow for a copy of the peer-reviewed study.

| Our PT told us that there was a study on different brands and types of Glu/Co and she said that the purest was a very in-expensive brand that can be purchased at WALMART!!! I think it was called Spring Valley. I will have to check my bottle, but I think that was it.

As far as another brand being purer, that could be true, but is purer always better? If it is purer but that pureness comes from a glucosamine source that is second best that isn't good either. Also, the G to C ratio has to be correct and then safety comes into play. I really like NutraMax. They seem like a nice company (so far) and hopefully won't have any recalls (ok, I'm dreaming now).
