What can I give Stedman for Constipation? So....my little guy seems to be constipated tonight :( This came out of the blue and I have no idea what I can give him to help make him GO  My poor little guy :( I want to help him so badly.....can anyone recommend something for me to give him? Thanks in advance! |
Doesn't canned pumpkin help with this? And just in case, is there anything else? |
My holistic vet told me that pumpkin works but sweet potato works faster. Just bake or microwave one, peel it and mash it!! Hope it helps!! Good Luck! |

I just want him to feel better :( I can't STAND to see them in any pain  |
I just found this online....does it sound good/right?? (especially the milk part)??? Never withhold water from your pet as this could set her up for kidney problems and other behavioral issues. Prevent constipation by adding vegetables to her diet. Many people use a combination of cut green beans mixed with wetted dry dog food. Don't forget that exercise is a great constipation cure. Depending on the age and condition of your dog, a long walk or a vigorous game of fetch does a great job of kick-starting a sluggish bowel and will have your dog as regular as clockwork in no time. Milk will often help the constipation problem as dogs even reluctant to drink water will most often drink the milk offered. Offer a small bowlful and let her lap it up. She will initially have a runny stool but it should solve the constipation problem. Canned pumpkin in its pureed form (not pumpkin pie filling) is also a great stool softener and a natural remedy for constipation. It helps soothe an upset stomach or indigestion in both cats and dogs. It is very rich in fiber and adding just one or two teaspoonfuls to your pet's food often gets their system moving in no time. Dogs may eat it by itself and that's all right too. |

And wouldn't ya know, I ran out of MILK today  So I have no milk OR sweet potatoes  Looks like it's a LATE trip to the store for me, hubbs and the kiddos :D :p |
How's Stedman today? Go Stedy, Go! :cheer: |
I'm wondering too, how did everything go?! Did you get the poop worked out? |
Canned pumpkin works great. I hope everything came out okay in the end! |

The last 2X Zoeybear got plugged up, I took her to the vet for a puppy enema. Im gonna try pumpkin next time because the enema is too traumatic. Hope Sted is better today. |
Awww, poor little Stedman. How is he doing today? Gracie was constipated recently also. Isn't it strange when it pops up out of the blue like that? I still have no idea what brought it on. Anyway, I gave her canned pumpkin twice a day with her regular meals and she was fine after a few days. I'll remember the sweet potato if it happens again. |
this is dietary.... but maybe a rectal suppository will help.. :) |

Poor little Stedman! Hope he is better today. All the suggestions, pumpkin, sweet potato, etc. sound good. I have a new idea that I am going to run past Toto's vet .... blueberries! I found out by accident that those will give you diahrrea, big time, if you eat too many of them!! :( Last summer while I was home for awhile, I discovered that my 4-yr. old granddaughter, Abbi, loves them. I knew that they were really good for her and because she has a problem not eating enough fiber, I let her eat them every time she asked! Opps!! Too many is not a "good thing"! Toto loves them too! Soooo ... if the vet says it's OK for Toto to have more than the 3-4 that I give her now, I'm going to add those to her daily treat ration! Anyone had any experience with these? Steddy ... Toto sends hugs & snuggles and hopes you feel better soon! :animal-pa |

Stedman says thank you so much for the hugs Toto...and he is sending them right back to you! |
Well, we were going to go to the store last night to get some sweet potatoes and milk, however, I did find a can of canned pumpkin in my pantry (I'm sure I bought it "just in case" - for emergencies like this), so I decided to try that first. Last night he fell asleep and slept through the night, so I didn't want to bother him...but this morning when he ate his first meal of the day, I mixed in some of the canned pumpkin. Immediately after that I let him out to go to the bathroom as he went straight to the door, so I had high hopes that maybe it was going to work  Unfortunately, he went out....and, nothing :( He still just can't seem to go :( My poor little guy! Of course, this morning was only the first time he had it since all this constipation stuff started, so maybe I just need to give it a little more time. I am going to continue to give it to him throughout the day and see if it helps. I will also be going to the store later to get some sweet potatoes and milk just in case the canned pumpkin doesn't work. Heck, I am going to try everything. :( How long should it take for the canned pumpkin to "kick in" do you think? And how long exactly should I let this go on before I take him to the vet to see what is going on? I was thinking that if he doesn't "go" today - that maybe I should take him in to see the vet tomorrow....but then again, maybe I should give it a little more time for the sweet potatoes/canned pumpkin/milk to kick in/work  |

Oh man Brooke he really is constipated!:( Gracie was still going it was just not an easy task for her. If he doesn't go today, I would call the vet tomorrow and just ask. I would be afraid his little tummy would start to hurt. BTW, it took a good full day before I saw any difference with Gracie and I think I kept her on the pumpkin for around 3 or 4 days total. |

If he doesn't go at all today, the vet will for sure be hearing from me tomorrow. I will first just call and see what they say before I bring him in. Thank you so much for all your help girl and I will keep everyone updated on what happens with the little man :( |
I hope you find something that helps but one time Teddy was constipated and my mom gave him olive oil, just a little bit like that and it worked. Also i think carrots make them go |

LOL..thanks again girl! |
Well I gave him more milk (quite a bit this time) and more canned pumpkin - neither of them has worked so far :( I didn't think I had enough milk left but there was still a little in the jug (plenty for him) but I am going to pick up more at the store when we go in just a few minutes to stock up on blueberries and sweet potatoes. And I am also going to try the olive oil and carrots when we get back home. Gosh I hope something works...I can tell that he is just in AGONY :( I hate this! :( |
Another update... We got back from the store and as I was cutting the sweet potatoes up into chunks, hubby knocked on one of the kitchen windows (he was outside with Stedman *trying* to get him to go potty) - well he did something with his hands and I just knew that he was trying to tell me that Stedman "went"...so I stopped what I was doing and walked outside and he said that he, ummm....pushed on Stedman's little hiney, lol...and he did poop, BUT - only a little came out and they were very hard and round (I looked at them to see for myself ). Well, we were HOPING that he would go more, but once again he was having problems going and still is :( SO, I chunked up the sweet potatoes, boiled them and now they are cooling. I forgot to do the carrots earlier, so they are boiling now. After the carrots are finished I am going to give Stedman some of the sweet potatoes, and carrots, and even some olive oil. Gosh I hope all this stuff doesn't upset his stomach  Just in case, I will give everything an hour (or more) apart to be on the safe side. Say a little prayer for him...I KNOW he is in pain, I can just tell :( |

At least he was able to release a little of the pressure. Wishing him much, um, success today!:) |
Poor Stedman. Sounds like your doing everything right. I would maybe mix a little water into the pumpkin and carrots to get more fluids into him. That may help loosen things up in there :p Keep us updated! |
