| Food Question Some background: Harley is 6 months old, weighs about 2.7 pounds, and has been eating Innova Puppy (26% protein, 12% fat) for the last 3 months (since I have had her). I want to keep her on dry food, though I would like to start incorporating some wet food into her diet mixed with the dry. I also want to add some weight on her because I worry about health problems with her being so small. I would also like to go grain-free as she has been itching and I am wondering if she is having allergies to the grain in the Innova Puppy. I have done a lot of research on dry foods, and decided to try Orijen Puppy (42% protein, 20% fat). I have been mixing in small amount of Orijen with her Innova since Friday. Though she has been pooping with the same frequency, she has been pooping a larger amount (than normal) each time, and some of it is softer than it used to be. Question: Is this just her body adjusting to the Orijen? Have other people experienced this with their dogs? How soon can I expect her poop to return to normal, if ever? With the expectation that this is just how her body reacts to Orijen, I am also looking into Evo (42% and 22%) and Taste of the Wild (32% and 18%). I am wondering if anyone who has used these two brands had problems with an increase in both volume and squishiness of the poop. Any help or advice would be appreciated. (And not to presumptively rain on anyone's parade, but at this time, I do not feel comfortable going to a raw or homecooked diet. Nor do I have concerns about the high-protein content of some of these foods, because I really want to put some weight on her and am aware that high protein is a likely trade-off for grain free.) Donating YT 10K Club Member | Yorkies have issues with high protein foods. I'd switch to something with a much lower protein count.

Also - I bought her a bully stick on Friday. I just read that someone else's pups had soft stool from a bully stick. Maybe that's the problem. Anyone else experience this? (The bully stick was Merrick brand if that matters) | |

| mine was fed orijen puppy as a baby and i've tried to switch it to merrick's puppy plate since D: i've mixed it slowly with the orijen for about 3-4 weeks now and i've experienced many soft poops i'm not sure if it was the change of food from a high protein to lower or if it was just too much together at once . :s |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I feed mine Wellness. On the advice of a breeder I never feed mine puppy formula food. A large breed dog needs lots of protein...a smaller breed does not. One problem with foods stating they are high protein...is the amount of indigestible protein in the food. Not all protein is good protein or necessarily from meat. In dry kibble it's processed protein and not like the simple protein found in the raw diet. If it's indigestible...they poo more out. If they don't use all the protein...it remains in their bodies and organs. Yorkies can get kidney stones...from amino acids...protein breaks down into amino acid. Of course any yorkie with other health problems...such as LS or MVD need lower protein diets. There are lots of threads in health and diet...I guess really it's a personal preference.

| Wellness CORE has almost identical protein and fat %'s as Taste of the Wild. Both are grain free. Wellness Super5 and Wellness Puppy have roughly similar amounts and protein as Innova Puppy (IIRC), which I am using now - and all of which are not grain free. My goal is to go grain-free because I suspect Harls is having allergies to Innova Puppy. Update: Yesterday morning, Harls had more Orejin mixed with her Innova than anytime previously. (But still only around 20-25%). She pooped ALOT yesterday while I was at work. Last night I fed her only Innova Puppy and her poop was pretty much back to normal (small, compact, non-squishy). I have to make a decision quickly since her Innova is almost gone, so I am going to try Taste of the Wild. It has higher protein and fat than Innova Puppy, but not nearly as much as Evo or Orijen, and it is grain-free. Additionally, it also comes in wet food which I would like to incorporate into her feeding after she has adjusted to the change in kibble. |

| I understand your concern, and a lot of members will have a lot of good advice, but keep in mind that while your Yorkie's body gets used to the new food their digestion will be a little out of wack. I'd say try 3 weeks on your brand of choice and see if the poop is still squishy. THEN try another. Give your furbaby time to get used to this new food!
