| Wheezing/Snorting episodes....is this common? I searched 300 posts and didn't see any questions/solutions about this. I have 2 yorkies and they both do this, although my 9 month old female Harley does it more often than my 18 month old male Joey. It seems to happen randomly and we have to "calm" them down. Met someone who recommended Bach Flower Essenses Rescue Remedy. I've now seen the word "Rescue Remedy" a few times but she says it's from the health food store and you put it under the tongue during a spasm. Any thoughts??? |

| I have heard of people on here using rescue remedy for car sickness but never the snorting. Mine do it also when they get excited. After they calm down they stop

| I panic the first time my yorkie did this and felt so helpless, now I realize it is not harmful and is a case of "reverse sneezing". Pick up a copy of "The Yorkshire Terrier" by Deborah Wood, Wayne Hunthausen DVM. I got my copy from Superpetz. They discuss this "reverse sneezing" and compare it to tracheal collaspe, which is a serious condition. According to the authors reverse sneezing is a common condition that is confused with tracheal collapse. They say that reverse sneezing is not serious and describe it as the yorkie sticking his head out, nose forward and making snorting sounds. They say it can happen when the yorkie is stressed or it can happen at any time. A solution they offer is to gently hold your hand on the muzzle or open the yorkie's mouth with your fingers so that he breaths thru his mouth. They also say that distracting him may help. Tracheal collapse is serious the dog is struggling to breath symptoms includes coughing especially with a honking sound and struggling for breath. If that is the case they need to see a vet about it asap. When my yorkie reverse sneeze, I just remain calm and bring her water bowl to her. Sometimes she'll drink the water. It does not last long at all just a few seconds. Hope this helps. |

| My vet told me that it is common in toy breeds to have this problem

Maybe if they are just ignored until they calm down themselves? I have some fosters that did that. Scary sometimes. | |

| Hi, I have a toy Yorkie that has just started doing the wheezing and snorting thing. It scares me when she does it, it does only last a few seconds but I'm so afraid shes not going to be able to catch her breath! How can I tell if its just reverse sneezing without taking her to the vet? My vet never lets me out of his office for under $100. I'm sure its nothing serious because it just happens every once in a while and then she goes right back to running and playing but I would just like to have peace of mind, if theres a way to help her without going to the vet. Thank you for any help you can give me..........Orlynn |
