My Yorkie is eating wood splinters/chips Hello Everyone! I was wondering if any of your babies eat wood or chew on sticks? Is this normal? Tinkerbell got into some wood last weekend and I have discovered wood in her stool. I thought we had resolved the problem since cleaning up the area around our wood burning stove. However, yesterday I found Tinkie's hiding place for stuff she isn't supposed to have. She had a little nest like place behind a bookshelf that consisted of: pennies, dried apples (I did let her have those for her teeth..ha ha) some plastic army guys, (son's toys) my sock, and what do you know...wood chips! She has been nawing on them all week! I thought I had puppy safed the entire house and I come upon this nest of stuff! She is absolutely a pill! Is she lacking in some kind of vitamin that she would want to chew on wood and eat it? Thank-you for helping out with this, I am at my wits end! Annie and Tinkie |
Wow...I thought it was just my little maniac! Dolce does THE SAME EXACT THING. We had our whole kitchen gutted and redone and I constantly found her chewing on the leftover wood the contractors left, plus she also enjoyed trying to get the plaster that was stuck to the floor and the NAILS they left. Talk about a heart attack when I saw THAT in her mouth. I totally thought we cleaned everything up when our kitchen was completed, but i found her chewing on a nail this morning. I really have no idea how they find these things...she has me crazy sometimes. Does yours chew on leaves??? Dolce LOVES plants (we have the ones that are non-toxic all over our house) and she is forever jumping up (they are floor plants whose leaves are high for her) trying to get the leaves. I find little leaf pieces all over the house and one time me and my mother heard a loud bang in the den...she had jumped up, grabbed a hold of the leaf and pulled the whole pot down....dirt everywhere!!! I wanted to kill her!! lol Hopefully they will get over this loving wood stage...I mean how can it TASTE good to them????? |

Aren't puppies gran! They seem to get into everything they aren't supposed to and they are so determined to do it too! ha ha Ahhh I know how frustrating they can be at times. I am a stay at home mom and I will tell you after a day with Tinkerbelle, I am absoutely exhausted! If she isn't attacking the cat, barking at the curtain, she is eating wood chips hidden in her secret hide-away! I am so glad I don't have plants!!! That sounds like it woud be one of her major targets after hearing your little one enjoys them so much!!! Good luck and hang in there....I think that might slow down a little with adulthood! I HOPE so :-) Annie and Tinkie |
Bentley LOVES to chew on the wood chips in our yard. He knows it is bad so he will grab a wood chip and run as far away from me as possible to chew on it. Luckily he knows what "no" means so he will drop it when I say "no". He's better now, but he used to do it all the time when we first got him. |
I am so glad to hear that this wood eating thing is normal! Here I thought Tinkie was a little off! Ha ha Thank you Bentley and Bentley's Mommy :-) Annie and Tinkie |
Ok, so its not just Dolce and Tinkie that eat wood??? lol I really hope that she stops thinking it tastes good. I mean sometimes she turns her nose up at Fruit Loops and then she's gonna go and chomp on a piece of wood like its filet mignon??!?!? I dont understand it. Yorkies....ya gotta love em!! :p |
out of all the chewies toby likes most..... i think the DOOR is his favorite!!!! this is a recent thing.... and very scary considering we are renting!! |
orinskye-I totally hear ya!!! Thank goodness she hasnt gotten a taste for any of the wood in my house...my mother would kill me!!! lol Actually I cant say she hasnt taking a liking to ANY wood, because she absolutely LOOOOVVEEESSSS the hardWOOD floors when it comes to doing her business!!! These babies are too much!! :D |
i am DEFFINATLY borrowing some bitter apple from my mother so i can spray it on teh door........!!! |
Bo loves to chew on just about anything he can get (mostly me! ). He also is attracted to some wood mulch that is around the trees in our yard. A word of caution though. I never let him chew on the wood if I can help it. Wood is extremely hard on their stomach and could cause a tear either there or in their esophagus. I'm not a vet but my 7 year old schnauzer chewed wood when he was a puppy and vomited a lot of blood and has had a delicate stomach ever since and he is on a special diet because of it. I would definately keep them away from the wood if at all possible. |
Yes, there must be a reason I'm missing a few little pieces off my coffee table leg! :P Yoda used to chew on everything he could, but we put Bitter Apple on lots of stuff, and he did realize that chewing on some things were bad. |
I think I meant Dolce and Dolce's Mommy! ha ha I am new to this board postin stuff! I am used to AOL...no brain required to operate! ha ha I know what you mean about them passing over something that "should" taste good for something that taste like dirt and has to be difficult to poo!!!! Yooowch! Yes...you have to luv'em :-) Thanks, Tinkie and Annie |

Our two love the door frames. I put hot sauce on them (the doors not my babies :p ) and they stopped. I also had to take their beds away from the frames here in the computer room. Was way too easy to lay there and chomp away. |

Thought I would share that! ha ha Annie and Tinkie |

Thanks for postin! Annie and Tinkie |
I have notice that Gucci is bieng chewing wood also. She is teething now so im assuming that is why she is doing that. I bought a spray that is supposed to make her stop chewing things she is no supposed to but I guess is not working or I didnt used it correctly. I keep telling her no, and she stop but as soon im gone she starts again. Like you all know yorkies are so smart, when she sees me coming she runs away and plays it like she wasnt chewing the furniture. Gucci has some teeths that have grown behind the baby teeth. I hope this will fall soon or most likely the will need to get pull. Gucci is 6 months now, so she will be in season soon and thgen my vet will spay her. The vet wont do anything until her ringworm gets cure. Her hair is growing back so i hope that the ringworm will be cure soon. She has being on treatment since we got her on Sept. |
Hi Babygirlyorkie, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble catching the little ones! I usually try to corner Bo. And yes, they are extremely smart... |
When Bentley first started doing it I was afraid he was going to get slivers in his mouth! I don't know if that ever happens to them. Bentley used to love chewing on anything wicker in the house. I would always catch him chewing on our hamper or magazine holder. One day when he was busy chewing and didn't notice me watching him, I took a magazine and threw it so it hit the hamper (it did not touch him, just hit the hamper he was chewing and made a loud noise). He jumped and looked startled. I said "scary, that hamper is scary". He hasn't chewed it since :) |
Ha ha ha The "Scary Hamper" story is cute :-) Yes, they are so smart and soooo fast! |
1 Attachment(s) I caught Gucci chewing on my furniture today. I bought a spray that is supposed to train her to not chew, bite or scratch the furniture but it hasnt help as of yet. I even trying the "scary furniture" but she will stop for a bit and then goes at it again when im not looking. |

I don't know how to keep him from chewing the furniture. That bitter apple stuff doesn't work on Tinkie either. I have been using a small portable dog carrier to put her in time out instead of her big comfy crate and that does seem to help some. Although, when I let her out, she tries to get me to think she isn't afraid of going back in by walking in and out of it! I think these dogs are just too smart sometimes. Good luck with Gucci. And, if I learn anything that will help next month at training I will make sure to pass it along :-) Tinkie and Annie |
Thank You Annie. Please do let me know if you learn anything new at training class, it will be great apreciate it. You are so rite, these pups are so smart. I dont have a crate, but maybe I should consider it. Thank you for the advise. |

Anytime Marie! Tinkie and Annie |
I have been using Grannick's bitter apple and Newf absolutely can't stand it. When he even see's the bottle he growls and barks at it . He totally freaks out!!! The lady at the pet store told me that when i catch him chewing on something to just give a little squirt in his mouth and then spray it on the furniture or whatever he was chewing on. I hated to do it like that but all it took was the one time and now as soon as he smells it on something he freaks out!!! :) |

Thanks for posting :-) |
I also have the wood problem with my yorkies but its small pieces of firewood. We have a wood burner in the living room and they constantly pick up the small chunks and chew on them. I guess they need some fiber in their diet? I take it away and tell them no but it doesn't work. |
my Frankie too I've had Frankie now for two weeks. He's just 9 months now. Every time I take him out to relieve himself, he always goes for the mulch. I take it away as well and tell him no but, it doesn't seem to work. Let me ask you all something. Do any of your dogs constantly have to pee? When he's outside, he pees everywhere...............LOL!!! Sometimes when he lifts his leg, nothing comes out. |

I think maybe it is just a chewing thing?????? |

He's already had a few 'accidents' in the house. It was more the first few days we had him here. I take him out frequently for pee pee. He hasn't been neutered yet. Does a dog have to be a certain age for that? I wanted to see though if we mate him first then have him neutered. |
