| Question On May 21 my dog started acting weird around 6pm. All of a sudden she started shaking like she was scared, then she ran away...and hid underneath a bed of a room that we don't even use. She wasn't even chasing the cat that she usually chases all the time... We took her outside to get fresh air because she kind of acting like maybe there was a bug on her face, and we thought maybe a bug went up her nose as well. So she started peeing and then wouldn't stop. We thought she may have a UTI because we remembered that same look and actions from when our cat Mitty had one several years ago. So we take her to the vet the next day. They had to draw urine through 'cystocentisis' They initially saw tiny flecks floating in the urine. So we waited and waited and then they finally brought her back and came back with the results. They showed us the lab results. Something about her white blood cell level was high and is consistent with infection somewhere in the body. There was a slight trace of blood in her urine too. I think they said her level was at 10 (????). He also said that when they checked her urine they found an egg in there from some kind of parasite but they couldn't identify it. They never directly said if it was a UTI or not, just some kind of a parasite. They prescribed some powder to put in her food for 5 days called Panacur, and then they gave us Simplicef pills to give her for 10 days. Oh ya they had given her an injectable antibiotic as well. And she got her bordatella shot, too. She definitely started acting normal again within a few hours of getting back from the vet. We gave her the powder up until the 3rd day I think. She refused to eat her food and so I figured since there was only one packet left she would be fine. My question is - how are they going to deworm her urine? She still has one antibiotic pill left as well now. Okay fast forward to last night, her poo looked neopolitan colored. Half dark brown, half beige - kinda like the color of her chicken food. Okay didn't think anything of it. So this morning she goes for her normal morning walk and does a big wet pile of the chicken colored stuff. While I was getting ready for work, my husband yells out "oh no" and I run out thinking maybe one of the cats puked again or something. I look and there was this big pile of diahhrea ridden poo in our living room from our dog. She knew she did bad and peeked around the corner. We never hit her or do anything bad to her. We yell at her 'no' when she does something like that though, or anything we don't want her doing. So we clean her up, and clean the mess up. About a half hour before I had to leave I took her outside and all she did was squirt stuff out. So now we have her in doggy isolation in the kitchen. She had a bout of diahhrea about 3 months ago, and I don't know if all this is related or not. |

| I did not know dogs could get parasites in their bladder so I did a little research and came up with this: The Dog Bladder Worm (Capillaria plica) So I guess it is possible for the eggs from different worms to get in the urine. As for the diarrhea, here is the information I found on the side effects of the Simplicef: An oral antibiotic most commonly used for skin infections. The most common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia. This antibiotic is similar to Cephalexin but is given once daily. This is what I found on the Panacur: An oral broad spectrum dewormer. Fenbendazole is the active ingredient. Panacur will kill roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and most species of tapeworms. Side effects are very rare at normal doses and may include vomiting. I sounds like your vet is on the right track with the Panacur because if I read the article correctly, maybe whipworms eggs or others could get in her urine. I am not sure about why he is giving Simplicef. Did the vet say she had a skin infection also? Most likely it is the Simplicef that is causing the diarrhea. You could possibly give her some pure canned pumpkin to firm up the stools, 1 tsp. twice a day. You can add a little karo syrup to the pumpkin to make it taste better. I would watch her closely and if the diarrhea continues you might want to call the vet and ask him about it. The Simplicef might be too strong for her. I hope you baby gets to feeling better soon. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Gosh, poor thing. I'd be calling your vet Monday to see if you need to bring her back. Is the dose okay? It should be 2.3-4.5mg/pound, once a day - so, it's not remarkably more than that, is it? Simplicef treats both gram+/gram- bacteria (which is good, it treats a lot) - and is used for skin, resp. infections, UTIs, ear stuff and other things - so it's for the UTI. But this level of diarrhea is kind of extreme. Maybe double check the dosage. Give pumpkin. Also, give some low-fat plain or vanilla yogurt - good for her digestive tract. And, bummer about the carpet - try not to get too upset at her though, bc remember that dogs have a *very* short digestive tract - so when they have diarrhea, they really have almost no warning and can't get to the right spot to go. Hang in there, she'll get better.

| We're only giving her half a tablet once a day. She weighs exactly 11 pounds. I'll go by the store after work today to buy some pumpkin and yogurt. Thanks for the advice, and I apologize for posting this in the wrong section. |
