Freezing doesn't kill bacteria; it just retards its growth. Let say bacteria X lives in a dog's mouth and a safe number of bacteria X is 1000. If the dog has 1000 or less of this bacteria in his mouth, he is just fine. Well suppose the dog chews on something; some of these bacteria go to this object. As long as the object is moist, the bacteria continue to grow, allowing the bacteria to grow in numbers over the 1000 safe level. Then if a dog, especially one with a compromised immune system licks the object, he might have these bacteria grow in his own mouth way over the 1000 safe level and spread it to other surfaces and other dogs. As soon as the object dries all the bacteria die because they have to have a moist warm environment in which to grow. With multiple dogs, the first dog could give the object bacteria, and other dogs keeping the surface moist and spreading it. If you place an object in the freezer that has bacteria on it, the bacteria will be at the same level when you remove it from the freezer. As the object thaws the bacteria will begin to grow again. Chlorine bleach kills most bacteria and some viruses, allowing surfaces to thoroughly dry is usually enough. Truthfully, some of those rope toys can take an awfully long time to dry out and I wash those often, even with just one dog. Diggy 4, you have not offended me, and if something like this had happened to me I probably would feel the same way, I just think stories such as yours can cause undo alarm. I have done a lot of reading on this subject and do feel like they are safe to use. If any of your dog chews or toys feels moist when you check them, either wash or rinse them and allow them to dry.

| Nancy1999......I have never heard of putting the chews in water and bleach. The bleach would not be harmful to the dogs? |

Chlorine bleach is an extremely safe way to kill bacteria. It's used in water supplies and in swimming pools at rather high levels. Allow the chews to dry.

| I found a recipe for liver cake on the net and my girls love that! It is very easy to make. I think it was just liver eggs and flour in the food processor and then put in a pan and bake for 1/2 hour of something like that. There are a ton of recipes. I even froze some of mine there were so many! |

| I have really struggled to find a treat that my little madam, Tootsy, didn't turn her little nose up to!! I have boxes and packets of treats in the cupboard- all opened (even the yorkie yummies!?) and only one piece taken out sniffed and then ignored by Toots. Recently I was sent a packet of Coachies and she has deigned to eat these, but only one or two, then walks off. I don't know if they are available over there. The company that stocks them over here is The Company of Animals. The product is made by BV De Hooge Hoek in The Netherlands. I don't know how good they are but the ingredients are reasonably OK. I can list the ingredients if anyone is interested. I am going to try the Cheerios Honey and Nut flavour and see if I have some success. She has a very sweet tooth. The one thing she wants to eat more than anything is chocolate but, of course, she cannot have it. She cries and cries, if she smells it in the house. Her last owner must have let her try some for her to know how good it tastes. Luv Franceen |

| Oh yes, I meant to say that I have also made batches and batches of various recipes that I have found for treats, only to have to give them away. So I have given up on the baking for now. She will eat pears and sometimes young carrots. All the things she likes are bad for her, poor thing. She loves yogurt but only the fruit yogurt with all the sugar in! Also she is lactose intolerant, anyway, so should not have dairy products. She cannot eat cheese either, and she loves that, too. Bit of a difficult one for me. Luv Franceen |

I too quit buying the chicken from China. I now make the babies their own chicken. Freeze some chicken breasts, thaw a little bit and slice them thin and sprinkle with garlic powder and dried parsley. I bake them on tin foil in my oven set at 250 degrees and turn every 45 min or so for about 2-3 hrs, depending on how thick they are. I break mine into small pieces and freeze them and take out enough for potty treats for the day. Good Luck. I also do this with Yams and Sweet Potatoes and they love them. I know what they are eating this way.

Recently bought the smallest bag of Orijen Senior.... Started Gucci out on it as a treat, one by one, then set a bowl down for him..... He liked it better as a treat than a main food.... so, Orijen Senior kibble is his treat for now. ??????
