| Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I was recently sent a sample of a new Greenies product. It's called Pill pockets, and it's a doggie treat with a hole in the middle to slip in medication. Up till now, I've avoided edible Greenies products because I just don't think a dog needs to swallow a chew bone. And I have a dog that does that quickly. Others disagree and have gone back to Greenies since they changed their recipe in response to the scare a while back where some dogs developed a blockage after wolfing them down too quickly. My question: Does this product seem safe to people who have avoided past Greenies products? Here are the ingredients. Do they raise any red flags? Chicken, glycerin, wheat flour, natural flavors, dried corn syrup, corn flour, wheat gluten, chicken liver meal, vegetable oil, lecithin, brewer's dried yeast, potassium sorbate, methylcellulose, ascorbic acid, mixed tocopheros, vitamin E. supplement. Made in USA Guaranteed analysis: Crude Protein / min. 13% Crude Fat: Min. 10 percent Crude Fiber: Max 2 percent Moisture: Max 26 percent Calorie content: Calories per treat: 4

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Given how small it is (4 cals), I honestly can't see how it'd be much of a problem. The ingredients don't look too bad either - although there is corn and wheat, which could be an issue. Methylcellulose is a thickener (and, kind of a laxative) - but in small doses, should theoretically be okay...

				   | Just saw this while I was looking for something else....I recently saw (think it was on one of the morning news shows, like GMA) a vet who was recommending these for those dogs who are obstinant about taking meds (too smart for their own good ). I know just b/c a vet recommends something on national television isn't the be-all and end-all, but it looks safe to me unless your dog is sensitive to wheat or corn.

				   | I use these every day for my dogs who do take pills. But what I do is I break a small peice off of the pocket and wrap that peice around the pill and they inhail it and never notice there is a pill inside

				   | Personally, I would just wrap the pill in cheese or peanut butter instead..but that's just overcautious me..

				   | My vets office had a different brand of pill pockets, it was more of a dog cookie treat and not a greenie. I can't remember the name though. I can stop by if someone needs to know.

				   | I always gave Snoodles GREENIES! My vet could not believe how white and clean her teeth were! But, Misty is another thing, she gulps her food and will swollow it whole. I cut it up in small pieces, but then, I don't think she gets the cleaning effect from it, so why give it? Pat |

				   | I'm giving Madison 1/2 of a Pepcid AC each morning and he won't take it plain but I just squish it into a piece of his canned food in the morning...it's pretty small, so he doesn't even hesitate when he's inhaling his food

According the Greenies, the cool thing about their pill pockets is they are low cal. And since most pets are overweight, they figure these will help control the problem. I initially didn't see the harm in stuffing them in a piece of cheese or some wet food, but I suppose if a small dog is taking a couple different kinds of pills a couple times a day, calories might be a concern.

				   | I just use a piece of pupperoni, slit it in two, put the pill in it and mash it around like clay, and they gobble it up. Much cheaper. I got some pill pockets for my dad and his yorkie chewed them and spit it all out with the pill bits. My bigger yorkie will just gulp pills, so no problem. The itty one is a nibbler. Let us know how they work for you though. Some days I'll try anything..........
