| Cooking for my baby Okay, it's official I need to get Katie off of bagged dog food. I have changed her food several times and no matter what it is she throws up about 20 minutes after eating it. I have taken her to the vet and they advised that I change her to a lamb and rice formula for sensitive bellys and even that has come up. I have even tried wet food and she just sniffs it and walks away. She's a food snob! I have been cooking for her for the past few weeks to month and she keeps that down just fine. I am very worried that she is not getting the vitamins and minerals that she needs so I am looking to all my yorkie friends out there for some advise as to what I should feed her. |

| Hi there! Welcome to YT! There are many of us YT members that homecook food for their furbabies. I'm actually cooking for mine right now A great place to start is a book called Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Cats & Dogs. This talks about the foods they can eat, the vitamins they need, and is a great reference for natural remedies for common ailments. Dr. Pitcairn's plan uses a "Healthy Powder" that you can add to home prepared food as well as to regular dog food to supplement. The recipe for this is in his book-I'd give it to you, but what's important is to read the book and understand the big idea around the diet, and what our dogs need and shouldn't have. Most recipes call for a protein, a starch, a vegetable, and sometimes a legume for extra protein. They can eat many vegetables, fruits, and some dairy. Just remember that raisins, grapes, onions, garlic, chocolate, macadamia nuts, and any fruit seeds are not good for dogs, and will make them very ill. Until you can start cooking, you might try putting a teaspoon of lowfat cottage cheese, or plain or vanilla yogurt (NO artificial sweeteners) on top of her dry food. That might entice her to eat it, and the extra calcium should be good for her Please let us know if you have other questions-there are lots of us on here, and we welcome questions about homecooking Try doing a search for "homecooking" or "homecooked food" and look through this part of the forum-you'll be sure to find lots of helpful information.

| Have you tried mixing a bit of canned dog food with the home cooked? I do that with my girls to help make sure they are getting all the nutrients they need. I'm wondering if home cooked mixed with canned might not stay down better than all canned?
