Well, if they have elevated numbers, it definitely points to a liver problem, but you won't know if it's an extrahepatic liver shunt or if it's MVD (hepatic microvascular dysplasia). It's possible that it could be something else though.
To find out if it's a liver shunt or MVD, a Protein C test would be in order.

Exactly, and MVD is very controllable with diet, regualr testing, and medication.

Remember elevated levels do not always mean liver shunt...what it means is there is a problem with his liver function. Nothing will have been diagnosed until further testing.

This is VERY true. The Protein C will tell you for sure. Levels can be up from a number of reasons...one your high protein food! To do an ultrasound it is almost impossible to see a shunt and is a waste of your money. Go for the Protein C test! You will know for SURE then!

Some vets are not aware of the other testing! Perhaps talk to your vet about the other test or find a vet that is willing to do it. To do a biopsy on a dog that doesn't need one is not a good thing for the baby and could waste your money!

Did your Vet have Logans test result sthis afternoon? I have't seen you post, and I know you were nervous and I am hoping you did not get bad news.

We use eagle pack holistic select duckmeal and oatmeal. It's made in Indiana. I'm not sure it's the lowest of the low protein, maybe closer to the middle. It's also good for allergies. Good Luck~
