To dock or not to dock???

I've seen many many tail docks done on puppies....some actually sleep through it, others whine a little, some scream. In all cases, they are completely content once they are placed back with their mothers and quiet again. It's very quick

I really believe any screaming has more to do with being blind and in unfamiliar surroundings with strange things going on..than any pain felt. The bones are still soft in newborn puppies and they just don't feel pain like an older dog would. I really think any screaming has more to do with being taken away from its momma, being blind and deaf, being held and restrained by something it doesn't know, and just not knowing what's going on....I've seen puppies scream just as much when just being picked up as newborns or when crying for its mother.

I know you are training to be a vet and your post gives me some comfort but the thought of it turns my stomach! I like the looks of the docked tail but I hate the thought of it. I'm glad I have my two... And we aren't getting any more so no more worries for me!

I've read of breeders who do this, and say sometimes the puppy doesn't even wake up. So I think MyFairLacy is once again correct.

Just IMO but I believe any type of amputation without anesthesia would hurt. If you dropped the puppy it would feel the pain, if you stepped on it it it would feel the pain and if you cut the tail off it will feel the pain. Just makes sense to me. Where there are nerves there is pain. I've never seen a puppy sleep through a tail docking personally but like I said this is only my experience and my opinion and I surely I don't mean to offend anyone.

My Pixie has her tail too..its sooo wonderful to see her expressing herself with it..it never stops wagging!

This is her at 14 weeks of age..the day she came home to us..she's now 10 months old!

I sincerely hate docking tails, I think it is barbaric. But in this country to follow the standard we have to for now. Hopefully this country will some day come to see how barbaric it truely is and we will get to enjoy the beautiful wagging tail.

If it was not practiced anymore and people got used to seeing this beautiful breed (and others that are usually docked) at the top shows complete with their tails, people would eventually get used to seeing the full tail and it would eventually not be called for anymore..would then stop In-experienced breeders making a mess of it and causing pain and suffering..in some cases even DEATH!

Go to the 'Advocates for Animals' website i posted above and look at the picture of the 11 puppies who died after their tails were cut off with a Stanley knife...heart breaking..

Why would anyone do this? Did they purposely do this to protest docking? Sorry, I can't look at the picture.

The 'Breeder' did this because people call for the docked tail..for vanity..The 'breeder' was obviously In-Experienced and didn't want the cost of the vet bill..so the poor little darlings suffered...wouldn't have happened if Tail Docking was not called for...BAN it and GET USED to it!!! The sooner the Top Breeders are showing dogs with full tails the better..the general public will soon follow suit and accept it.

Sounds like that breeder should never be breeding puppies. How stupid and then she took a picture of it?

No..the RSPCA (Royal Society For The Protection of Cruelty To Animals) here in the UK took the picture..probably to be used in evidence against the person responsible for this barbaric act..
