| Question..... Hubby brought home a brand new little guy (new to us) today. Apparently his human Mommy passed away a few months ago and he has been living with a "foster" family until my dh persuaded them that he needed a new home and a new family. He's 4 years old, weighs 3 pounds, neutered, and probably scared to death! Anyway, I've not got to even see him yet, as I am in another state dealing with some family issues, but what should I feed him? I know he cannot possibly eat the big chunk dog food that we have for our other boys.... Any suggestions? Tips? Tricks? Thank you all in advance! Julie |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk. It's best to feed exactly what the last owner fed for a few weeks til he gets adjusted. Then if it isn't a good brand, you could go to something like Canidae or Natural Balance if you want to continue with kibble. If you don't know what they were feeding, I'd either try the new food of choice or boil some white meat chicken (no fat, skin or seasonings) and mix it with white rice for a few days because that should set.

| Congratulations on your new furbaby! I bet you are so excited to see him! Is there a way you can find out what his foster family was feeding him? Since he's already scared, I wouldn't change his diet immediatly if you can help it.By the way, Welcome to YT!!

| Apparently the family gave dh a bag of food, but it's in a plastic baggie. I suppose I could make him some chicken and rice and maybe mix it with some Natural Balance? I am going to call dh in the AM, and the family is supposed to be looking for vet records for me, so I can probably just have him ask what type of food they were giving him too (if he remembers!). ANd yes... I am VERY excited about seeing him! Thank you for all your advice and welcomes! I do believe I am going to like it here! |

This might happen when you switch from his old food too quickly. If they only gave you a little bit, I would give 75% of that and 25% of what you want to switch to for a few days, then 50%-50%, then 25%-75%, then 100% new. It should take no LESS than 4-7 days and hopefully longer to switch. If at all possible, feed what he has been getting for the first few weeks though.

| DH says he's not eating, but I attribute that to everything being new, and I'm not particularly worried about that. I'm sure he's been snacking with my 15 y/o dd! Thank you for the advice on what to feed him... I'll do that for him! |
