I have a problem and a question. I have been fighting allergies for the past 5 months that we have had our Yorkie. I've been put on medications, had meds changed, you name it. I still break out in hives if I hold him or he licks me. He now ends up spending most of his time in his xpen because he jumps all over the couches (and me) when he is out, and the kiddies have lost interest in entertaining him. I don't know if I should re-home him, or put up with the itching. I can't bring myself to look for a new home

Any suggestions??

I hear your struggle and your heartbreak - but it sounds like your health is placing you between a rock and a hard place. With the kiddies losing interest, the pup is pretty much relegated to living in the x-pen - and I can tell it's already killing you.

If you can't give the pup the love/affection/touching/caring that it needs - and you've tried everything in terms of medications - then my suggestion, at that point, would be to do the right thing by the puppy (esp. since he is still young and able to bond w/ another family without much damage yet) and give him a new home.

I know it hurts, but you don't want to the pup to spend his life in an xpen, do you?

Have you tried Zertec? ( hopefully that's spelled right ). You can buy it over the counter now without a perscription. It's for indoor and outdoor allergies.

I hope you find something that works for you so you can keep and enjoy many, many years of love and affection from your Yorkie.

I would put your health first..believe me, I have rehomed dogs in my life, and would again if I had too...dogs adjust a lot quicker than people think...I had one I rehomed that was attached pretty much to my hip, she's now 5 years old and probably wouldn't know me if she saw me..but, I would check with people on here first if you decide to rehome, that way you could keep up with him. I think in the yorkies wanted and for sale section on here, someone was looking for a puppy in PA

I had a bad allergy to cats and had 2 persians. Zyrtec was the only medicine that helped me with allergies both indoor and outdoor...cats, hayfever, ragweed, etc. I tried Claritin at one time but it didn't do anything for the cats. Good Luck!

Thanks for the responses. Most of the oral meds I've tried helped a little. I can not take them too often because I was told I had some changes on my EKG, that made the doc leary about prescribing anything else. The orals didn't seem to help with the hives though. If he licks my face or neck, a hive pops out. If I brush his hair, my hands break out in hives. It's crazy. I told the kids today I was on strike, and I couldn't handle him at all, and it was up to them, or else we would have to rehome. So far...today...they have been picking up the slack. We'll see how it goes. It really makes me sad to think about this, he's so sweet! I even tried 4 different shampoos...

I'm so sorry that you have allergies to your Yorkie. You seem to be allergic to the same allergen as my daughter. The saliva. Here's a link that explains it well: http://allergies.about.com/od/specif...dogallergy.htm . My daughter cannot handle the dogs but loves them so much. She's 30 and 1 of her 3 kids is also allergic to the saliva. He holds them and then changes his clothes and washes good.

Yes, exactly. It is the saliva I am reacting to. He must have some on his nose too, because if I am holding him and he noses around my neck, I will break out all over my chest. I even break out in the vets office (itching and sneezing). I have asthma anyway, but he doesn't seem to trigger that. But when the hives break out, my skin goes nuts. I now have a constant rash on my face, have been on antibiotics 3 times in the last 2 months, all triggered by an "allergen". Does your daughter have dogs? I try to wash my hands as soon as I'm finished holding him or brushing him, but it is usually too late. How does she keep her dog but avoid him? I'm usually the one home with him, and he LOVES to play fetch. If I ignore him, he will bring his saliva soaked toy and drop it right on my head (he walks along the top of the couch). It's funny, but itchy....

I guess there isn't much else to do but live with it...
