| Diabetic dog? I was wondering if anyone has a diabetic dog? I see that my boy is peeing a lot, not necessarily drinking a lot though. I am diabetic myself, and fear that this increased urination is a sign of diabetes. Does anyone know what a dog's blood sugar should be? Can you do a dog's blood sugar with human blood sugar strips? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! ~Melody

| My brother adopted a dog that they said was diabetic. I guess it had to have honey drops or something several times a day. It would get real limp. Sad thing is the "breeder" didn't tell him this. He just thought the dog was sick and was going to die.

| I have a diabetic Bichon. You should take him to your vet, they can diagnose it or rule it ouut.

| Are you sure it isn't a urinary tract infection?

| no, i'm not. but the urine amount is copious and appears to be dilute (almost no color to it). in an infection don't they pee just a little bit each time and the urine is a dark yellow?

| Loki has something called Diabetes Insipidus (water diabetes) but it's very rare. His pee is clear without his medicine. I'd make an appointment with the vet.

It doesn't have to be small spots to be a UTI.

| My little one was just diagnosed with a UTI a few days ago. She never acted like she was in pain, just drank lots of water, and peed large amounts and more often than usual. Vet took a urine and blood sample to rule out diabetes or kidney damage. Sure enough it showed blood in the urine, UTI, and she was started on a 14 day regimen of Clavamox. I'd say it is a good possibility. I would see a vet as soon as possible. |

| Thanks HShanks. I will see a vet next week. He has a broken leg I have to take him in for every week anyway. I hope that is all it is. ~Melody

| One of our dogs was just diagnosed with severe diabetes a couple of days ago. He was drinking a lot, and had lost weight, and not eating well. They did blood work, and I found out the next day it was diabetes. He is now getting insulin shots twice a day, as well as a major change in diet. Good luck! |

| My Lady is a diabetic. Excessive urination and excessive drinking are the classic signs an owner first notices. To answer your question, yes, you can check his blood glucose with your meter. I check Lady myself with an Ultra One Touch. Normal blood sugar is similar to humans, between 80-120. Paw pricks don't work on dogs. The best place to get the drop of blood is inside the lip right above the canine teeth. There is a vein that runs vertically along there plus it is not a very sensitive area. If he is good about having his mouth touched, maybe you can do it. Here is a step by step that may be helpful: http://www.sugarcats.net/sites/harry/lipprick.html |
