| Stanford and Daddy go to the vet Hi all- Well, Stannie and I went to the vet today. Here is the rundown, as some of you wanted an update: He does not have mange (as per skin scrapings). Vet thinks it was a poor diet, possible allergies, or a thyroid problem that made the hair fall out. She recommended a good diet and supplements (which he is already getting), and will have the blood work results back by the end of the week. So we will know if there is a thyroid issue or not. She said the meds for the thyroid are very inexpensive. He had worms. So got some Droncit for those nasty buggers. Urine sample taken for analysis. Had a complete "Senior" blood profile done. Got all vaccinations. Blood drawn for heartworm check. If clear, I got the pills to give him. If not, we will take it from there. Toenails clipped. He is missing one nail completely. Vet said to watch that toe in case it gets infected or ingrown. No sign of this yet. Teeth are in bad shape. Missing some, and two are rotten and need to come out. Rest need to be cleaned. He will be going in for this at the end of the month. No pain evidenced in the mouth area. Terrible breath. He has gained 1.1 lbs in the past three weeks. He is up to 4.11 lbs now. Yeah!! Vet and techs fell in love with him. He kissed the vet on the nose once, and that was that, I might as well have not even been there. She and the techs were all over him, kissing, hugging, cooing. He even made friends with a big, grumpy dog in the waiting room. Owner said that her dog is never friendly or patient with any other dogs, but he ended up giving Stannie a lick on the snout as they touched noses. The vet was very kind, and given the circumstances of his coming to me (which she wanted to know all about, as she expected the big dog to be in the exam room), she gave a big discount, almost 85.00 off my total bill (which would have been over 300.00 without the discount). So she has my business forever. Stanford was so brave...they took a lot of blood, multiple shots, and of course, the toe nail clipping that he was not fond of. But he did not snarl, snap, struggle, or pitch a fit. For that, the techs were grateful and gave him even more loving, apologizing the entire time for everything they had to do. They are a good bunch there. Stannie is coming alive at last. Wants to sleep in the bedroom with the big dog, playing, bossing the cats, and enjoying a long ride in the car. I took him into the pet store, where he got spoiled more, and got to pick out his own treats by sniffing and yapping. Liked the ride in the cart, but finally wanted Daddy to pick him up and give him some cuddle time. He is so sweet, and brave. A welcome addition to our family. Thanks for listening to my probably boring litany. Matthew |

| see if they can check for a yeast infection on the skin. My SIL had that and her yorkie is still losing her hair but it is coming back in some spots. They just gave her some medicated shampoo that she has to use a few times a week

| So good to hear that Stannie is doing better thanks to your loving care. Your posts are never boring and I was thrilled to see the update. Glad to see he is getting more comfortable again in your home. He was probably a little leary about relaxing after being taken from you the first time. I hope he is with you for a long, long time and you can get him back to complete health. Here is the link to the original story about Stannie / aka Myles in case some of you missed his story. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=102496 |

| Update on Stanford- Good news Well, I heard from the vet today, and all of Stannie's bloodwork came back just fine. No thyroid problem, heartworm negative, she did say "some levels" were a bit elevated, but not to a clinically worrisome level. So he began his heartworm prevention today. He goes at the end of the month to get teeth cleaned, and 2 extracted, as they are rotten. Today was another big day, as he, the big dog (AKA TJ) and I took off to spend time with my partner, in the woods outside of Gadsden, AL. A two hour drive. Stannie pitched a fit being in the carrier...whining, and then doing that "baby screaming" thing. So I let him out, and he slept on my leg for most of the trip. Not safe, I know. Any suggestions for a safer car trip? It seems to be vitally important that he can see out the window, but I was afraid to put him in the back seat with TJ, as he might get accidentially trampled. Once we got here, he is having a great time. Enjoyed exploring for a bit on our walk, then got to meet and interact with some very friendly rat terriers who live up the road. He immediately climbed into my partners lap in a show of affection (unfortunately, it is not mutual, but I think it will come with time...LOL--partner is very attached to TJ.) But he let Stannie stay there for a good while, so things might change soon. With all the excitement, Stannie conked out several hours ago. He is getting lots of fresh air and exercise this weekend. I figured out that he will come to me when called if I open my arms wide when calling to him. He is so sweet. Is getting in the habit of coming to the door to go out with the big dog in the morning. He also really is showing his playful side, with invitations to play and be chased. Of course, it lasts for about 5 minutes, then he has to take a nap! I cleaned his ears out, and vet says no mites, so that is a good thing as well. He is also getting more "snuggly" and seems to be a tad upset when I have to leave for school, but is very excited when I get home. No accidents in the house either. It appears that he is getting a fine growth of hair on the "naked" spots, so maybe it is coming back in. Vet says to watch it, and let her know if it appears to not be coming back in, or spreads. And, he took his heartworm pill from my hand, with no fussing or having to hide it in food. Way to go, Stannie! I guess that is it for now. We are all tired and worn out, so off to bed for me. |

| Matthew -- I think I missed the first part of Stanley's story, but I have been spellbound reading this post. I am so very glad to hear that your Stannie is doing so well, is gaining weight, and growing healthier. Sounds like he is making friends everywhere he goes. Way to go Stannie! |

| Stanford sounds like he is quite the little man, and knows how to draw others to him. Glad you found a good vet. Praying his health continues to improve and that the teeth cleaning/removal goes well

| Matthew I still think you are an angel disguised as a student. I am so glad that Stanford is settling in so nicely. See he was meant to be with you all along. I think your partner will soon fall in love with Stannie....NOBODY can resist a yorkie's cute little face. Sounds like y'all had great fun on your getaway.

| Another DOG... We are having great fun, Patty. Stanford took a BIG (at least a 1/2 mile) walk today, and had a great time. He is meeting more people and other dogs, all of whom seem to like him a great deal. BTW- again, my neighbors across the street moved out and ABANDONED their dog! I don't know what is wrong with people. I spoke to another neighbor, who said they moved less than 7 miles away, but did not have the money for a pet deposit. (blah blah blah...) She offered to pay the deposit for them, but they declined...so it is obvious they have no interest in the dog. So I and two other neighbors have been feeding and watering him. I called all the local "rescues" within 100 miles of Tuscaloosa, and they are "all full, don't take un-neutered dogs, don't take adults" etc... more blah, blah, blah. I am very disappointed that none of these places can find a spot for him. Good thing he is not in an "emergency" situation. I know that places like this get little if any funding and are stretched to the limit usually, but they need to amend their websites and info and let people know they are no longer doing intakes. I placed some notices through school my university, and everyone (including the rescue places) is begging me not to take him the shelter, as he will be put down. But no one is stepping up to the plate. I cannot take in another animal right now. My budget and room are maxed out. I feel like finding out where the owners are, and taking him there, and say "You forgot someone!" But they would just turn him loose again. So if any of you are in the West Alabama area (Tuscaloosa/Birmingham), or even Huntsville or Gadsden, ask around and see if anyone would like to take in a sweet boy. He is a mix (not sure what), about 60-70 lbs, house trained, good with kids and other dogs, not good with cats. Health status unknown. I have known him since he was a puppy, and he is about 2-3 years old now. Black, white and tan coat, coat very thick. I think he might be a herding type dog. Not neutered. I am not at home right now, but will post pics Sunday night/Monday morning. Will keep you posted... Thanks! |
