im not an expert but we had to bring my little beaker boy and my husbands boxer to the vet the other day for shots... we also had the same question for the vet about how much we should be feeding our puppies a day.... he said if you are feeding you dogs hard food then it should tell you have much to feed your dog on the backof the bag of dog food.... sure enough we looked on the back of our dog food bag when we got home and there was a chart,, it went by age, and weight of dog... helped us out a lot... also vet said that you should take the amount of which you should feed your dog and split it in half.... half in morning and the other half at night.....

We got Higgins when he was 7.5 weeks old and fed him a tablespoon of food about 4 times a day until he was about 4 months old. We also offered dry kibble at all times, along with fresh water. At about 4 months, we went to 3 times a day and then at 6 months we started feeding him twice a day, which we still do....though he eats dry kibble all the time now and we have it down at all times for both dogs. He doesn't really eat a lot. About 1/4 to 1/3 cup per day TOTAL.

I feed my yorkie a half cup of Science Diet a day. He's 5 months and about 4 lbs now. He also gets a teaspoon of olive oil, about a tablespoon of meat baby food, and some vitamin E. He was underweight when we got him, and he's about right now, so I'll be feeding him between 1/4-1/2 cup here soon. Be aware that treats can have tons of calories. If you have treats, break up one or two to feed him throughout the whole day. A regular treat to a lab can be a meal for a yorkie. It is important to keep your baby in a good weight range to avoid joint problems and promote general healthiness. Puppies do need more food though. What kind of food are you giving him? For a two lb, less than 4 month old puppy, 1/2 cup of quality food will be plenty. If she's half that size, then 1/4 cup should work. Feed 3-4 times a day and consider putting a bit of Kayro syrup in her water if she is real tiny -- to prevent hypoglycemia.

| I am feeding her royal canin for puppies, and she is almost two or maybe two pounds. Is that weight good for an 8 week old puppy?

I'd say half a cup. A lot of people on Yorkietalk really love the Royal Canin. It's high quality from what I've heard. I'd feed half a cup -- you had it right! As far as her weight, that sounds okay for an 8 week pup ... she may end up around 6 or more lbs. To give you an idea of how much weight can vary, check out this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...0618#post10618 Also, a puppy growth chart, used commonly for toy dogs, including chihuahua's: http://members.cox.net/landrys_kenne...owth_chart.htm As far as whether she's in the right weight range for her structure, ask your vet. The vet can ascertain whether she's just right or overweight ... or underweight for that matter. My pup was underweight -- 5 months, 3.5 lbs. But some people have full grown yorkies that are the right weight and weigh only 3-4 lbs. Happy Gracie day! We can't wait to see pics!

It depends on what you're feeding your yorkie. Dog food labels, I notice, differ in amounts of how much you should feed them. I also heard that some companies say their foods save money, but they just change the feeding amounts on the back. I don't follow it to T, to be honest. Generally, I feed Archie 1/3 or 1/4 of a can of wet food at each feeding and have dry food out for him all day (1/2 of a can if it's one of the little cans). I feed him twice a day. Since Archie tends to be a picky eater, I kinda have to trust that he knows how much he wants to eat. Some days he finishes the full 1/3 and some days not...it depends on his activity level for the day, whether he got treats, etc. Also, some days he will eat a lot in the morning and hardly any at night, or he'll eat a lot in the middle of the night, and nothing in the morning, or both times of the day. My vet said that it's best to leave food out for him all day and let him decide. Dogs generally don't starve themselves like cats might. Keep in mind, too, that some dog foods are full of water (the first ingredient is "water sufficient for processing"), so they might need to eat more of those than those that are full of meat, grains and vegetables in order to get the proper nutrition/calories for their activity levels. If you're really worried, then talk to your vet. This is one of those things that you kinda have to play by ear. See what your dog needs, and the choices he/she makes. Just be careful of supplementing the meals with treats and stuff because, for example, a milkbone dog biscuit can be almost like a meal for a yorkie. I give Archie treats only on days that his activity level is high because I know that he can burn those calories off.
