Is It Healthy?????

for my baby girl (17weeks old), and she has only gained 1 once since i got her???? she is very healthy (the vet said), very active, plays hard with my gussy (my male yorkie) and runs around everywhere at my apartment. she poops reguarly and eats all her food. she drinks lots of water too. SO.. is this normal??? also, if you all can tell me how much weight your puppy has gain in 5 weeks???

FYI: as of last wednesday she was at 2 pounds 8 ounces, according to banfield's scale (large), and when i weighed her last night she was 2 pounds 4 ounces (human scale, not baby).

Well my vet suggested that lily gain at least 3oz in between visits witch were every 3 weeks but I THINK most vets say they should put on 4-8%of birth weight a week.

I would be concerned with that small of weight gain

Sadie seems to gain an oz or two a week. but we have 3 vet offices. All the scales are diffrent. One will say she weighs 2.2 the other office wil say she weighs 2.6. So it could be the scale is not reading right. Matter of fact. Unless she holds perfectly still the scale bounces back and fourth a few ounces. Sadie is 17 weeks this week and as far as I know she is 2.6 or 2.8. I think she is a very healthy weight and if your baby looks any thing like Sadie she sounds like she is gaining ok to me.

Pixie was putting on around an oz a week..she's 8 months and seems to have slowed down now. if she's happy and healthy and running around there can't be too much wrong!

Her breeder doesn't dock the tails any more. She seems to think it's to much stress on them and the mom. I love the waggy tail! I love the docked look also. I have one of each!

Before you get too worried, take her to Banfield's and weigh her on their scale. They let me use their scale several times and Gizmo's not even a patient there.

She's a cutie. I can't help with the weight question because I was always worried about Gizmo gaining so quickly. I do know they go through growth spurts, so maybe she's due for one?

ok if the scale says she is 3.5 does that mean she is 3 and a half pounds of 3pounds and 5oz?

From 12 -16 weeks. Tucker went from 2.3 oz to 2.75 oz. So, I guess that was about an oz. a week. He's a little over 5 months now and I haven't a clue what he weighs. We're going for neutering soon. I guess I'll find out then. HTH!

I know her weight came up in your other thread about breeding.

Do you know if her breeder screened her dogs for liver disease before breeding them? Yorkies are thirty-six times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined. It is inherited so reputable breeders should screen the parents before breeding them. Even then, a shunt can still show up in a puppy.

A Yorkie can appear very healthy, but failure to gain weight is a symptom of a liver shunt. To be safe, you should have bloodwork and a bile acids test (BAT) done on her. Just bloodwork alone won't tell you whether or not she has a shunt.

A BAT is a very simple and inexpensive test, about $40-80 depending on where you live. Because of the high rate of shunts in Yorkies, Dr. Center, one of the leading authorities in the country) recommends that all Yorkie puppies have a BAT done before going to their new home.

Hopefully everything is fine, but you really need to get that test done to rule out a shunt.

I agree i would weigh her on the same scale again
