New mother Hi all, I'm new here and have a question for any of you who can answer. What do you feed your nursing mothers??? There seems to be a lot about puppy health but I can't seem to find anything about the mothers. My little girl has just had her first litter of three and she seems to be hungry all of the time. Her usual food does not seem to satisfy her. Any suggestions??? thanks to all who respond. Dona

You are lucky mine tend to be very fussy after whelping and are so picky. She should be on puppy food already? Does she eat all her food and want more? Keep her bowl full of food and water at all times. Then you can give the extras being she is not picky.venision,chicken,cottagecheese.vegtables.Or is she on adult food then you might want to add some canned puppy food to her diet. Are you supplementing her with calcium like calcium tablets from your vet or tums?

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | I had mine on puppy food, as well as cottage cheese, and she would get scrambled eggs daily too. She was eating close to three times more than normal - which is what she'll need to sustain the puppies. Good luck to you!!

Hi there. My little angel just had 3 babies 9 days ago. She is eating almost a can of puppy food a day, plus I give her Nutracal twice a day.

Nursing mamas need a lot more food that they normally would. I feed mine a combination of Canidae and Chicken Soup Puppy dry food. I add some canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice Puppy food. Mine are fed at 7:30 a.m., 5:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. They also have dry food always available. They also get 1 Doc Roy's Healthy Bones tablet a day, half in the morning and half at night. Here is a recipe that someone else posted on another thread, I might have to give it a try too: Post Whelping Pudding 16 oz. water 1 pkg. Knox Gelatin (micro. to disolve) 15 oz. can evap. milk 2 tabls. vanilla yogurt 2 egg yolks 2 tabls. white corn syrup mix all ingred. in bowl let set in fridge until thickens. Spoon out as needed. Here's another to give to mom immediately after whelping 1 can of goats milk equal parts of water 1 egg yolk 1 table spoon of Karo syrup. Helps to get her strength back. Place a bowl right up to her and she'll lap it right up. Both of the recipes help with milk production.
