Default Bacterial Infections???

This is the second time in two months that Tricksie has had a bacterial infection. The first time, we thought it could be caused by her chewing up pillows, blankets, etc. They gave her fluids and an antibiotic and she was fine in a few hours. Sat. I gave her a Bully Stick and she chewed on it for 15 min., I took it from her, just a test. She also had been chewing on a dental bone for a week. She started vomiting up foam in the night and pooping. (sorry if I am repeating myself to some of you), Her poop turned into what looked like raw liver and had an awful smell. Sunday night, the same thing into this morning. Took her to the Vet, a bacterial infection again, no temp, her urine was green, and blood in her stool. They gave her fluids and antibiotics again. If this happens again, they will run more tests to see if there is something else wrong with her. He told me to boil skinless chicken breast and white rice, and give her NO, yogurt, cottage cheese or any other human foods. When we got home I gave her the medicine and fixed her wet Pedigree with rice and SHE ATE IT!!! Now she wants to play.
The Bully Stick and the Dental bone are in the garbage.
Think I will put LA in a blender to make it smaller for her because I mix it with wet and she will eat the wet and leave the dry.
Pray for my Baby.
Donna

No, she had her yearly check up last week and they did a blood panel and she was in perfect health.

This Has Happened To Henry Twice, The Poop And Vomiting The Same. That's Why I Cameon The Site Tonight . I Took Him Out A Little While Ago And He Pooped Good An Firm But Had Just A Little Of The Yukky Stuff Hung On To His Hair.
Both Times I Took Him To The Vet They Did A Blood Panel The Last Time And Everything Was Good. I Home Cook For Henry, And Thats All He Gets But He Has Been Chewing On My Blanket . I Found Holes In It. He Has Never Done This Before. He Has Been Licking On Everthing His Bed , Me The Furniture.
Iwill Call The Vetr Inthe Morning , Thinking About Taking Him Somewhere Different. We Have A New Vet Bout 100 Miles From Here That Specially Is Natural Medicine. I Hate Giving Henry Another Round Of Antibiodics , 3 In The Last 6 Weeks.
Any Advise.

I'm sorry you two are going through this. I would go with more testing if it happens again.

I definitely recommend more testing. Food-born illness is not common in dogs - normally only happens in an immunocompromised dog (which can be for several reason - stress, surgery, illness, etc.). Hope your baby feels better

All of this information can be so confusing, all dogs are different. My Vet does not recommend home cooking except when she is sick, "Then" boil chicken breast and rice?? SO--- she will only want the real chicken when she gets well!!!! I have been feeding her a teas. of low fat cottage cheese and a teas. of sugar free apple sauce every afternoon for months, he said not to give it to her. The first time she had the bacterial infection she was eating sheets, blankets, zippers out of pillow covers, etc. She has hopefully out grown that. Good Luck.

A lot of vets share your vets views. I am not sure I would feed cottage cheese with a stomach problem (because it can cause diarrhea in a few dogs) but there are tons of foods that wouldn't hurt at all. So I'm a bit confused with your vet's recommendations.

So are saying the first time this happened she was eating blankets and this time you don't know what she ate?

Default bacterial infections

The first time she got the infection she had been chewing on blankets, zippers out of pillow covers, etc. so we thought that was the problem. This time, the only thing that she had new was the Bully Stick.

Wish we had Instant Messenger.

Had she ever had bully sticks before this?
Was it a new one or had it been sitting around for awhile?

I have a 5 month old and she has been having the same symptoms! I thought it was the food I was giving her, I recently had to change because I couldn't find the other brand. I'm glad I read your post. I was hoping to not have to take her to the vet, due to the cost, but will have to bite the bullet! Thank you! I'll make an apptointment today.

Bully sticks and the like gave my girls diarrhea really bad. They are not a healthy thing to give. They are totally loaded down in all sorts of chemicals to keep them from rotting on the shelves, but they still have expiration dates that most people ignore. I think the reason the Vet. said not to feed dairy is because it can make diarrhea worse, but is excellent food otherwise.
You may also want to reconsider feeding human food instead of dog food.

Chemicals? I guess there would have to be but I never really thought about it. I don't give 'em anyway.

TJ was the same way when he was little. Oh that smell of that globby mucus slimy poop!

After blood test and such, we discovered that he had an overgrowth of bacteria in his intestines (IBD). The Vet gave him Tylan powder to take everyday. He finally got over these episodes and is Tylan free.

Bully sticks did it too to him, and so did greenies.

How old is she?

You might want to also change her diet to a healthy homecooked one. IMO Pedigree is really not a good food. It's loaded with fillers and yucky by-products.

I would start by feeding brown rice, boiled chicken, steamed green beans. You can start to add other things too. But her digestive track and tummy need a good rest.

Keep us posted!
