My puppy has the shakes! Hi all my puppy is shaking his head alot, I'm not sure if he is just a nervous puppy or what but I have had him for a month now, should I be worried? |
Like violently shaking??? or nervous shaking??? Those are very different... If its nervous shaking he might be high strung, allergic to something, cold... sick... If its violent shaking he could have, an ear infection, ear mites, hair in his ears... many different things... |
Does this happen right before or right after meals? |
It not violently but I'm concerned it seems like he is scared or nervous, he will play for awhile but then starts to shake his head again |
When I picked him up from the breeder he was like that but we just thought it would go away after he got use to my family, His personality is very quiet and sweet, very lovable, but he does play around for alittle while through out the day I would say he has a burst of energy once in the morning and once in the night so I'm not sure if he is high strung. |
I have to pay attention to see if it is happening more right before or after meals BUT it seems like it is through out the day that he shakes |
Does he shake his head like a he is trying to get something off his head or more like it is rocking back and forth... Has he been checked by your vet since you got him? |
I really don't know but I would be concerned with his liver. Are you sure it isn't hypoglycemia? Does he ever press his head against solid objects, act depressed, lose his appetite, walk around in circles? |
Welcome to YT! I hope your baby will be ok ! |

Yes I have taken him to the Vet 3 times, he has had his shots and d worming, and has had lab work to see if he had any worms, the vet said he was shaking because he was nervous about being there, but I told him he shakes like that alot, he said he seems to be healthy. He did say he has a soft spot on his head that hasn't closed but that was normal in small dogs. He doesn't seem depressed and isn't walking in circles but he doesn't eat that much, I have to feed him so he will eat, I'm not sure if he forgets to eat or just wants me to feed him |

No he doesn't seem like he is trying to get anything off his head |
What test do I need to ask for to see if he is hypo |
I will check back in tomorrow I have to go now, but thanks |
[QUOTE=Abbymartinez;1679298]What test do I need to ask for to see if he is hypo[/QUOTE Not sure. Someone here might know. Something you can do at home is when he starts shaking give him a little bit (on your finger) of karo syrup or nutrical. If that stops the shaking almost instantly then it is probably hypo, if not it must be something else. No pup should be nervous enough to shake that often unless he is cold... Otherwise you can do a bile acid test (a blood test before and after eating) to check for liver problems which are extremely common in Yorkies. This problem is quite serious so hopefully it's not that. |

Please try a bit of white Karo syrup or go to the pet store and by Nutrical. If this doesn't work you may want to consult with another vet for a 2nd opinion. I do want to welcome you to YT |
I hope your baby gets better:thumbup: |
Thank you all so much! you all have been a big help! I was listen & reading another chat site about puppies shaking and I found about half a dozen people with the same problem, but they seem to think the puppies are just cold? I don't think he is cold, because even if I have the heater on and a sweater on him he still does this. Thanks again for all your support!!;) |
I have been giving him the nutrical but NO:confused: change in his shaking, he goes to the Vet tomorrow so I will keep you all posted. |
I know this isn't the same but my mother and grandmother did the same thing. They both had nerve problems. If you can't get it resolved any other way you might need to get her checked. |
Keep us updated,good luck. |
Well I have bad news the second vet that i saw today said he is having head tremors and he thinks that maybe it is due to his liver. he wants me to go see a specialist like a nuerologists to run some tests on him, He also said that when dogs have liver problems that it is not an easy fix, alot of tests and a surgery would need to be done, and he said the surgery doesn't always fix the problems. he thinks it is already affecting his brain because of the way he is behaving, i was there for about 40 minutes for him to evalute him. I called the breeder that I got him from and she said I could return him and get another puppy, so now my family has to go thru all this emotional feelings beause we are already attached to him:( I asked her what would happen to him and she said he would go to a recue place that could help him out. This a too much for me and my daughter we were both in tears today. :( |
I am so sorry. Would the Breeder be willing to help with vet bills if you kept him and treated him. |

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry that it wasn't just nerves. :( I don't know what I would do if I was in this situation. How heartbreaking. Please keep us updated, I haven't gone through anything like this to know the costs but I venture to think it is very expensive just to do even the testing. :( |
Hi everyone I've been talking with the breeder and I asked her if I wanted to keep him would she help with the Vet bills and she said NO:mad: I kinda had a feeling she would say no. But then I asked her was the new litter from the same DAD because the Vet told me this is pasted thru genetics, she said she is not sure if its the same father, so now I'm not even sure of the next puppy that I will be getting.:( She said she wouldn't do any cash refund of course. How frusting this all is I wonder if there is someone I can report her to? She is just breeding for the money and not caring about what she's doing She had litters in Sept, Oct and Dec that seems to be alot of breeding going on. My sister bought a puppy from her from the Oct litter and the puppy has had a cough ever since she got her, the Vet said she would be ok This is what I get for going thru a newspaper ad!! My last puppy was from a internet ad and I guess I just got really lucky because she has been so wonderfuland and Healthy too |
