| Heartworm Meds? Where do you get your heartworm medicine from? Im trying to find the best value. I had a website bookmarked..some thing along the lines of "pet products direct" or something, but I can't seem to find it now! Also..I need somewhere where the prescription is not required. THANKS!

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I get mine from the vet but here is the deal...they will match a price. When I went they wanted $36 for a six month supply but kvvetsupply.com and jefferspet.com had it for $18 for the six month supply. I told my vet I would get it from them all I needed was the script. He told me to print the price page and he would match it. The vet's office have a huge mark up on things so shop around. I would suggest you also tell the vet that you saw it cheaper and see if they will match. Even at the discounted price they are still making a profit.

| The reason a prescription is required to buy heartworm medication is that a dog must be tested yearly to make sure they do not have heartworms. If they do and a heartworm pill is given, it can kill your dog. The dead worms can clog the arteries and stop the heart. Also, the FDA has an entire warning about counterfeit heartworm products on the market. Buying them from someplace that doesn't require a prescription increases the risk that you will get a counterfeit product. You may be lulled into thinking that your dog is protected from this deadly disease when he is not. http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2006/606_pets.html Please, please do not pinch pennies with this particular medication and risk the health of your dog. Ask your vet if he will match the online price of a reputable pharmacy like KV Vet, Drs. Foster & Smith, etc. Many will to keep their patients safe. |
