| Best joint supplement???? Delilah is less than 10 months old and already I am hearing her little joints pop sometime when I pick her up. She does not seem to notice but guess she will start to feel the pain as she ages....like we all do! So, I wanted to go ahead and get her started on something to help....may do no good but figure it could not hurt. What do you recommend?

| After a big taurma (being bitten by another dog), Kimchee has luxation patella. Sometimes, when he plays he would suddenly cried and stopped playing. I knew he had pain in his joint. Since I gave him Pet Guard Joint and Hip for Dogs (just half a tablet per day), he never cries anymore, and he runs like a horse at home. This tablet also has Yucca for pain relief. The only thing is the tablet doesn't taste that good, I always dip it into his gravy and feed him with food. He will swallow it without a problem. |

| The most important thing to look for when you choose a glucosamine supplement is the amount required for your dog by weight. The less expensive supplements and the foods or treats with added glucosamine just don't have enough to make a difference. Lady needs 300 mg per day according to my vet. She weighs 7.5-8 pounds. Here's a nice chart for OTC medications: http://www.walkervalleyvet.com/otc-meds.htm As far as what brand, it's best to stick with the top brands like Glycoflex or Cosequin. They really are the best. You get what you pay for in this case. It's also important to get your puppies knees checked by your vet if you're hearing popping noises in his joints. |

| In regards to Glucosamine, be sure to look at the label at the warnings before giving it to your dog and closely monitor them the first time you give it. There are several 'don't use ifs' that you need to make sure don't apply to your dog. (I.e. I have a one dog who cannot have it with her food as she is allergic to shell fish.) |

| Thank you for the information. I have been looking at this one. Do you think this one would be a good one. I have heard that giving one with vitamin C is more beneficial. Oh, and Delilah only weighs 2 lobs. tap://wy.wy.com/wy.tamal

| Apparently raw chicken feet are a good natural source of glucosamine and chondroiton since the feet are made of mostly cartilage. I haven't gotten the courage to go out and buy any yet though

| Lolas knee pops & now T is lifting a leg when walking The glycoflex seems alittle cheaper & more importantly had better ingredience imo. I ordered the glycoflex III, which I guess is better then I or II from http://www.kvvet.com had the best price from what I could find & reasonable shipping. 120 chewables for $31.95, yorkies may only need 1/4 tab. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | supplements are good if you dog has a grade 1 or 2 and isn't showing to many signs of LP. I have morgan on nupro joint supplement and she's dong great. If your dog is holding the leg up a lot, skipping, or crying out in pain then he/she really needs to see a surgeon.

| Tilula may be just holding it up because she bumped it but I am ,aking her a appt. with the vet to have her evaluated & figure the suppliments cant hurt. She hasnt cried about it. Of coarse someone may have accidentally hurt her when I wasnt home & wont say because they are terrified of being killed I pulled & squeezed, she never yelped. But I will have to see what the vet says. I may try to bring her up to cinci, these country bumpkin vets..He never graded Lolas just said it was poppin pretty good |

| If your vets are "country bumpkins", see if they'll refer you to an orthopedic vet. You'd want to do that anyway for a second opinion so it will save you time and money. |

| .....my yorkie Millee was born w LP and it was pretty much under control w the raw diet but last year when she turned 8 she hopped a lot w the colder weather.......I put her on the glucos/condroitin(sp?) and it made all the difference.......this winter she is doing great and I give her pcs of the tablets sparingly.......I would try everyone's suggestions before surgery ...that should be the very last resort........because later in life they will have to deal w arthritis.......................and BTW that Lola is one rockin little Santa yorkie! |
