| Turkey Warning!!! Hey everyone i wanted to pass along some info that a doggie author that we know by the name of Carla Genender passed along to us: With Thanksgiving approaching, I want to pass on a warning I received from my vet last year: Do Not Give Turkey To Your Dog! He said that every year he gets numerous sick dogs brought in from eating turkey (mostly small dogs). I have researched this, and the information I have found is that the skin is fatty and can cause pancreatitis. However, even giving just white meat can be dangerous as there is a chemical in some brands of turkey that is bad for dogs and there is no way of knowing which brands contain this chemical - so it's better to be safe than sorry.

| I give Gracie a bit of turkey every now and then and she does fine. My vet said it is OK as long as it is white meat and cooked really well. If turkey is so bad, why is it in dog food, even the prime brands?

| I gave mine a little bit, I don't think a little bit can hurt them. "A little Bit", meaning: A small little piece smaller than a dime to each one. |

| I gave my guys a small plate of turkey each today. They seem fine so far. I usually give them turkey as snacks, but I'll keep this in mind. |

| Small amounts of turkey should not do dogs any harm. My dogs have it raw as part of their RAW diet. The problems generally occur when people allow small dogs that are used to nothing but kibble to completely gorge themselves on it, especially on the greasy skin and fat. Moderation is the key.

like it says there can be a chemical in the white meat that we can't really know if it is there or not... so better safe than sorry... i'm just trying to give everyone a heads up... you can chose to take the warning or ignore it... also remember different pups react differently to things... it might not affect them right now; but maybe some other time it will... it is probably a turkey that doesnt have the same chemical or different grade that is put into their food. i hope everyone has a happy and safe thanksgiving Lots of Yorkie kisses from Belle and I

| Ellie got a little bit of turkey and she used to eat it in her homecooked food. She only gets white meat now. My major concern with turkey is that some dogs do react badly to it and may be allergic. I don't think Thanksgiving is a good day to experiment. I will keep the chemical thing in mind though. Maybe Amish would be better?

| Oh crap. Please don't tell me this. I just came from my brother's house and has a small poodle. He won't feed him table food because he says that then he'll go in the garbage looking. I was cleaning up and felt really bad and gave him just a few pieces of dry turkey with nothing on it. I feed my girls boiled chicken so I never thought about him getting sick. Just felt badly because he looked hungry and he never gets any treats - just his dry food. I never thought turkey would hurt him. E. |
