| Pet Insurance Can you tell me what type of pet insurance you have and an approximate monthly cost. I just read my AKC newspaper and it said it's important to have when you have little (they said the TOY word) dogs.

| Yea, it's better to get insurance when they're younger. The older, the costlier, or they might not even insure your pet anymore. In Canada, insurance costs around $26 - 56/month depending on if we want higher coverage. Some people don't insure their pets, but it definitely helps to be assured in case a huge surgery comes up for whatever reason. Last edited by dani23d; 11-19-2007 at 10:55 AM. |

| I guess it depends why you want it. I can understand people getting it for accidents and injuries but other than that I'm not so sure. Usually insurance plans don't cover diseases common to a specific breed or congenital defects. So that leaves out just about 100% of cases of luxating patella, liver shunt... If you went with just an accident plan it would probably run about $15-$20 a month. That is $240 yearly. In five years that is over $1000 and you may not have to deal with an accident in that time, so you've spent it for nothing. I would just save up what you can and if there is an emergency you can always use care credit. I see people on here list what they got back from insurance and what they pay in monthly. It doesn't look like a deal. I am still looking into it though.

| So it wouldn't even cover luxating patella's or liver shunts? That's the whole reason I wanted it.

| I can't tell with VPI right now (if they cover lp and shunts) but I know I read somewhere that one insurance company doesn't cover problems common to a breed. VPI may be a better one but I'm not sure. I would be asking a lot of questions before I signed up.

| Thanks I guess I'll have to do a lot of research into them before I decide what I want to do. I would assume if they have an existing problem they wouldn't cover it.
