| How much how often I was scrolling through but I can't find out how much to feed and how often. I know this is probably obvious to most but my husband bought it to my attention that I was really overfeeding my puppy (now 13 weeks) because I was using a self feeder. For lack of a better description, he looks like a teapot teacup. Are there any general rules of thumb for feeding? |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | for puppies you can generally go by the guidelines on the back of the food bag. Since your pup likes to eat alot i'd stop free feeding him. my pup used to eat 1/4 - 1/2 cup of food a day. So since he's 13 weeks, split 1/2 cup of food into three meals and feed him a breakfast, lunch, and dinner instead of a smörgåsbord of food all day long.

| There can be great variance between the foods on what to feed. Consult the bag & even the company's website for more information. What are you feeding?

| How much food? It depends on the quality of the food. High quality costs more but you feed less. Its best to feed them on a schedule 2 to 3 times a day depending on age. I feed my 2 Mini Schnauzers twice a day. They get the food for about 45 minutes and if they don't eat it it gets picked up. They weigh 15 pounds right now and they get 1/2 cup in the morning and a half cup in the evening. This promotes them going to the bathroom at certain times too. They are pretty high energy. The bag is a good starting point. If they start looking pudgy then a little less.If you give them a lot of treats or any table food then subtract some of the kibble or can food. I use Canidea, Orijen, and Evo food. David |

| big duh for me it never crossed my mind to read the bag of iams puppy. It says a cup but I think I will feed him a little less since his favorite spot is under the kids when they eat so I know he is getting a little table scraps. I'm also implementing the 45 mins rule thanks everyone |

| You might also want to compare the quality of different foods. I'm sorry to say that iams is not the best food. Also, some higher quality foods actually require smaller portions. you can compare foods at http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_f...iews/index.php the 6 star are probably too much for a yorkie - so look at 4 & 5 star. You can see how iams rates here
