| Why is my puppy eating poop? Ok, I give up. Since I've got Deegan about a week and a half ago, he's been constantly eating or chewing on things when he's supposed to be going pee. He gets so distracted when I put him out to potty by having twigs, mulch, helicopters from the trees, worms etc, etc in his mouth. And recently he's even been eating poop and it's grossing me out!! Not his own poop though. Why is he doing this and how can I get him to stop??? |

| I have no idea! But you need to have lots of patience with these little furbabies. Good luck, I am sure that someone here has experienced this situation and will be able to help you!

| EEEEEEEEEEEppppppppp You really have to keep him on a short leash and teach him "Don't touch" He must like left overs !!! hehehe Puppies are so curious and like babies want to put everything in their mouth. He is just so excited and everything is new right now. I have also taught Mya the command "That is NOT a Toy !" Maybe you should get your little a guy a bunch of toys for at home so that things outside are not as appealing? Many people use the "leave it" command along with "Drop it". I think he just needs time to catch on. Our biggest problem is the freaking glass from @#$%(!! breaking bottles in the pathways, ravine and parks.

| I don't have any idea why they do that but I guess we need to figure out a way to stop him. Isn't that how they can contact Parvo and worms? Our puppies are about the same age but mine still has one shot to go. I keep her potty business inside on wee pads right now. Can't imagine what she would get into outside...inside is hard enough. I set up an ex pen and have wee pads and a bed in there. she is doing a good job of using the wee pads about 80% of the time. If you only want him going potty outside can you set up a little fenced in area (use garden fencing) for him? Make sure the area is free and clean and set him in that? Just an idea.... Good thing they are so much fun because they are sure a lot of work aren't they? Good luck! |

If it was me, I would just scoop the poo or take them out on a leash to keep them away from the poo.

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | My vet said that eating poop is a puppy thing, as is chewing on everything...it is a phase and they will grow out of it with some help...at Petco they have a medicine called DETER and it is for poop eating...we gave it to the girls and then anytime they go back towards their poop we tell them "leave it" and over time they have stopped, now they only do it occassionaly and that is usually out of boredom!!! Hope that is of some help....

| I'm new to the group and I'm having the same problem. I just started my Moxie on Deter by 8 in 1. I've been told it's very effective. It takes a couple days to get in their system then it makes the their poop taste terrible. I'll post in a couple days to let you all know how I make out. Terry |

| This Is Really Gross- Sorry Guys, I have an even worse story. Every once in a while one of my females will eat her own and then throw it up. It is almost embarrassing to talk about. It is the most disgusting thing in the world. Thank heavens I have tile flooring, because this has happened in the house before. She does not eat it from outside. The only time it has happened is when she has had an accident inside. I don't know if she is trying to clean up after herself as mother dogs do with their babies or what. I have never seen her eat it from outside though. Actually I have never seen her eat it inside either- but the smell of her throw up gives it away. Thank goodness this has only happened a few times, but to be honest, the first time was more than enough for me. I still love her though.

| My husband believes that the puppies are probably scared that they have poop and are trying to hide it from you. When we leave our wookie at home, we inspect his poops and there are no bite marks. He only does that when he knows we are at home. Everytime wookie poops when we are at home, he trys to do it quickly, if he sees us, he will run away, but if he doesn't he smells it and trys to chew at it, but I would tell him no and he would run like crazy. hahahaha |
