| Allergies? Hi all! I just had Wid at the vet for his Rabies vacc. My doc noticed some redness inside his eyelids, and a bit of watery discharge from his eyes. He also had some older scabs around his ears from scratchng. He noted that he probably has allergies, and to keep his eye area clean a free of build-up and clean his ears regularly. He feels it is probably environmental, like ours. Ragweed, dust, etc... Any suggestions on helping him improve?? FYI: Wid came to me from very bad circumstances about five weeks ago. Previously fed a very poor diet, and kept in a tiny cage in his own urine. So he probably has not totally recuperated in spite of my care. Thank you, WidsMom |

| First, bless you for taking care of Wid. Sounds like he needs a good home. Does he scratch and his skin and chew his feet, or is it just the discharge and itchy ears? Please keep after his ears. Once they develop chronic ear infections that can become a lifelong battle. Also, if he's itchy, I find Aveeno oatmeal baths work. Another member told me you can use regular oatmeal as well. (cheaper). Also, I wash Gingers face with aveeno baby bath and shampoo. Helps keep her eyes clear and the gook away and doesnt hurt her little eyes at all. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Wash his feet (with baby wipe, damp washcloth or good old running water) when you bring him in to remove residue from the yard. Change your furnace/ac filters regularly. You can also use benedryl if it's severe, search for correct dosage. You may wish to research that as some prefer to avoid meds altogether. I prefer for my girl to be comfortable, so I have succumed to the benedryl (and occasional stronger meds from the vet). A high quality diet is a must. You might try switching to something with a less common protein source (white fish or lamb) and with no corn, wheat, or corn/wheat byproducts. Good luck!!!

| Allergies/Thank you! Thank you so much for these suggestions! Other than his ears and runny eyes, he's not bothered. Occasionally I'll see him nibble a leg, or flank, but it's more of a itch that he can satisfy, then he stops. I have him on Wysong Archetype Burgers...raw dehydrated human grade beef and vegetables. But I certainly don't mind trying something with an alternative protein source. Fortunately, my home has all hardwood floors, so dust isn't too much of a challenge. I will change all my filters though, just to be sure! Any ideas for a diet change? Brands? We do have a local beekeeper just a few miles away who sells honey, I can add that for sure! What about other supplements? Thanks again, WidsMom |

Layla also has horrible allergies... and she bites on her arms... our vet suggested Children's liquid dye free benedryl to help with the itchying.. so if his itchy intensifies you might want to try that. it is 1ml per 5 lbs | |

| My Otis is on hydroxyzine 10mg twice daily. I recently tried to discontinue it because we had a frost and he started itching again, so I restarted it. The vet called it "hayfever". He is on Eagle Pack Duck meal and oatmeal, or it may be venison. Anyway, when he takes his meds and eats the right food, he's MUCH better. Good luck, Wid and you are lucky to have each other. Sounds like your doing everything you can for him!! Keep up the good work, what a good dog mommy you are!!

| nature's variety raw.. be sure to read the label on the raw package to make sure there is nothing in there that your dog would be allergic to. Turbo is allergic to any kind of poultry including eggs. NV raw has eggs in every one of there varieties. I had heard that dogs would not be allergic to food in its raw state. This is not the case with my dog and he could not eat any of the NV versions of raw. I wanted to get him Primal (A lot better pre-made raw) but it is not available in my area, I can not afford to have raw shipped. Good luck!!

| Well I totally believe in a quality food. As far as supplements, I use Missing Link - it makes a huge difference in their coats, not sure how it effects their eyes & ears though. I'm still at work - I'll check my package when I get home & see if it mentions organs, or maybe someone else knows. Bubba had problems with his eyes and ears - finding the right food really changed the gunky eyes. I go to a holistic/acupuncture vet and when I got Bubba at 1 1/2 yrs old I was told he had chronic ear infections - my vet took him off the antibiotic a traditional vet had given the previous owners - he said it really wasn't effect, because Bubba had build up a tolerance to it - anyway, he gave us this little bottle of holistic formula & I still have to occasionally use it, be it's so seldom now. Watch his ears - its so important - mine scratches that's how I know, or I find Roxie licking them for him -- if you can catch it early I think this makes a difference
