Help ! ! As you all know I went away for a week. Well I came back and Galen's coat is full of large mats. There are some quite large ones. I want to cry. I need your opinion. Do I try to get them out or do I just cut him and let it grow back? |
ITWM, I would try to get them out, but if it's too difficult, might be worth shaving him... |
My groomer told me she uses thinning scissors to cut the mats. This breaks the mat/knot but you don't loose a large chunk of hair. |

OMG He is beautiful. I would try and get as many out as you can. I would take a few days to work on them so he doesn't get too stressed. |
Poor Galen! I wish we lived closer so that I could come over and help you. I PM'ed a bunch of suggestions before you resort to cutting. |
Oh....Surely after only one week you can get most of the them out. Just don't pull to hard mommy! Wish I could help you to! I'm a master at it with one of my dogs! |
She said she gave him a bath too. I don't think she blow dried him. A couple of mats are 5 inches long. His are one big mat. And huge mat under his chin. |
Awe...that's not good... |
Nope it is not. I got some good ideas I am going to try tomorrow. I hope they work. If not. . . .he gets clipped |
dog Galen is beautiful but I would not hurt him by trying to pull out those mats. When they are too bad I cut them out. His fur will grow back and he will be fine. I trim my boys back when it is hot anyway. Those mats hurt bad when one pulls on them or trys to release the tangle. If there is a conditioner that would get them out I would try that but if all else fails and it hurts him, cut them. Remember how we used to tease our hair up by ratting it? It would hurt like the dickens to get those rats out. Poor Galen, same pain. I hope you get this problem solved soon. He is such a neat dog! |

I feel so bad, Teri. I how heartbreaking this must be. You have worked so hard to keep Galen's coat beautiful. I have a couple of conditioners that are really good with matts. They would most likely get to you by Monday. Galen has such a gorgeous face, and he will look beautiful if you have to cut him down. |
One of my flaws as a doggie mommy is brushing my dogs as much as they need. I let my big shih tuz hair grow out one time... it was beautiful !! BUT it would get matts if I did not brush correctly--I did find a de tangling spray worked really well. The other thing is to be sure you have a comb or brush that is getting all the hair, sometime I was brushing but a matt was forming near the skin. I too have left my dogs with friends and just cried when I came home. I just kept telling myself that they were happy and safe, I could deal with the hair and it would grow back. Good luck |

Try a tangle teazer brush , I think they work wonders on matts , at first you don't think it doing anything and then it seems to work it's way through the matt. |
Update . . . .Well I tried very hard to get one of the mats out. I worked on it last night. i got up this morning and worked on it. He cried. I could not not put him through it. I can not hear him cry. It broke my heart. I talked to the near by groomer that was very good with him. She told me to come in at 12 to take a look to see what she can do. Se just kept shaking her head. She was like I am so sorry. He has to get shaved. She is going to leave his face with top knot( I was able to at least get that mat out. Under his chin and side of cheek has a big mat. She is going to do her best and make him look good. She is also going to leave his plume. That was the only area he did not have a mat. I got back into the car and cried. Silly. |

I don't think that you are being silly// you have worked hard to keep his coat looking so beautiful |
I'm really sorry, Teri. You made the right choice for Galen, though. You don't want him to fear being groomed, and I couldn't stand it either if I was hurting my little girl. PM me your address and which ones you'd like to try, and I would be very happy to send you some. I can't wait to see Galen. He's going to look gorgeous this way, too, Galen is going to look so tiny. |

Looking forward to seeing Galen after his haircut. |
Oh poor baby Galen, poor Teri. He always looked so beautiful and he still will. No need for tears it grows back. I don't know what your dog sitter did or didn't do but Yikes !! He will look darling with or without his long hair. You may even find that you prefer him in a shorter cut. Maybe a Joey cut. Cant wait to see a pic. of the new Galen. |
Ohh...Teri he will be ok and his hair will grow back. I'll just bet he's as beautiful with short hair as he is with long. Post pictures when you can. |
