Morkie Hey guys. I might be a little off topic but I was curious about something. I just got a morkie. I was looking at her coat and she seems to have an undercoat. She's 8 weeks old. Is this normal, or am I seeing it wrong? She has black and gold hair on her back but when I part her hair, I see fuzzy gold hair underneath. I thought yorkies and maltese only had 1 coat so it just seems confusing. Maybe this is just puppy hair? Any answers would help. Thanks! |

I'd never use peroxide around the eyes... never! Boric acid is in most eye washes... I'd never use contact lens solutions either... too much junk in them... preservatives and such.... |

I know my vet cautioned about peroxide when I listed it as a ' suppliment'we use for my mini schnauzer, but so far we've never had an issue. |

The thing is... some dogs may have an allergy to thimerosol(sp), a preservative used in many eye products, and most of those products sting a little in the human eye, so I can't see my dogs tolerating it too well. Also, warming any solution to be used in the eyes is much more comfortable (for people and pets). I also keep plain eye wash in my emergency first aid kit. Peek got a bite wound inside his lower lid and it swelled up so fast... I grabbed the eye wash and gently rinsed all around and in the eye just before we headed off to the vet's. By the time we got there his eye looked normal... I almost forgot to tell the vet about it as he had quite a few other facial lacerations. He tried to attack Tinkerbell. She opened her mouth (she's 15#, he's 6#) and his head went inside... she did not bite down but he sustained wounds from her teeth on his nose and around his eyes. Nothing major, but due to the location of the wounds and the rapid swelling, a vet check was in order. He healed up fine, no permanent damage... |

I believe that I prolonged Max's eye problems by using sterile saline eye drops to clean hair and things out of his eyes. The preservative in the bottled saline gave him terrible problems. When I started using regular water, the problems went away. |

I'm glad Peek was okay. |

I'll just continue snipping & cleaning their eyes 2-3 x's a day. Turbo & Princess has almost grown out their short cut & Princess can have a top knot again! Turbo has grown out his nose hairs & they don't poke him in the eye anymore.:D |
Systane, Bauch Lamb abd Opticas sensative (my old boss actually uses this one daily) are all preservative free in both eye washes and contact solutions. Children's eye was was suggested-rx specifically for infants...but getting the rx is a bit problematic if its for use in dogs. Ironically a veterinary opthamologist was suggested for inquaries... |

I would think tap water would be irritating, as it contains fluoride, chlorine and other additives to make it healthy for ingestion... IDK. As for those tear stain removal products... the ones I looked at say 'keep out of the eyes'... which is impossible to do (I always get eye makeup remover in my eyes, bc wetness and eyelashes just wick the stuff up into the eye) so I figure the same thing would happen with my dogs' eyes and those products. Even my vet was going to give me Animax AB stuff for Peek's wounds, and I was concerned with getting that in his eyes. So I asked if Opthalmic AB Ointment would also heal the skin around his eyes, as I had to use some in his eyes for the wound inside his lower lid anyway. I also worried that he might start rubbing the area and get the Animax (for skin wounds) in his eyes. She said the Opthalmic Ointment would work on the skin too... so I didn't have to worry... |
The CVS preservative-free eye wash is what I used on Max. I agree that it seems tap water would have horrible things in it that would be more irritating, but the eye wash irritated Max's eyes. |
