Hair at the corners of her eyes tough to manage Jillie has small clumps of hair that grow out of the inside corner of each eye. When I try to comb them down across her nose, they don't sit down because I think they're inducing tearing. They get wet and curly and stand up, bringing more tearing. When I try to bring them up into her topknot, it looks funny and you can clearly see those two strands, which are darker, going up into the topknot. They may be darker because they're permanently stained from tearing. Is this a common problem? Does anyone have a solution? I'm always been hesitant to snip them off because my breeder told me DON'T CUT NOSE HAIR. But she's almost 4, and I'm getting tired of it. |
Tibbe stays in a puppy cut with no topknot and I keep these clumps of hair clipped down on Tibbe and he rarely tears. I usually just use safety-tip scissors or a little mustache grooming tool from Walmart that can't cut the skin. But it does, once you cut the long hair length off and have 1/4" or so left, take out the rest safely albeit slowly as it's not a fast cutting instrument but it is safer that way. I've used it for years and never nicked Tibbe. I also use it on the top 1/3 of his ears and all along the edges. I tried every way I could to see if it would cut my skin along the edge of fingers, arms, nose, etc., and it didn't before I tried it on Tibbe. |
I cut all of my girls nose hair. I just find it easier to manage. |
I trim up the center of Hueys nose and I use the clippers to get those dark, tear stained hairs at the inner eye. He wont let me trim his toenails but I can clip next to his eyeballs without any problem. Go figure... |
Ziva is almost 4 too and has the same problem. We have tried very short and now long, the hair just grows so close to the eye nothing works. The last vet visit the Dr. said something had to give because she had to much irritation (we were 1/2 grown out at that time) Abby doesn't have this issue at all! |

Thanks for the tips, everybody! There's an AKC dog show in town this weekend. I think I'll drop by and talk to some Yorkie owners. |
I never trim nose hair. I use Natural Tears and or eye wash for humans to clean the eye area, and a flea comb to get the nasties out. I also use antibiotic eye ointment for dogs occassionally. It will melt down into the hair a bit but will keep the hair out of her eyes till it gets some length on it. Interested in hearing what the pros tell you... |

Target Mobile Site - Lansinoh HPA Lanolin - 40g Has to be hpa lanolin or a specific breastfeeding safe lanolin-sorry! This means its safe fir ingestion abd eye contact. And the Madin mustache comb from mimimomo... 6 months of paste and combing Elvis' eye & nose hair and Princess' stubborn schnahzer brows are finally not only in the place I want but growing that way. I tried everything too, firm tooth brushes, groomers putty...nope the above and regular daily now weekly hair training helps. Poor Elvis the groomer cut his nose and eye hair-what a mistake it grew back wilder! |
I am anxious to hear what the experts say too...both of mine (after 2 years of growing) still had the tearing and the corner of the eye hair problem. I finally go tired of trying to keep it out of their eyes and use blunt tip scissors and snip the hair right in the corner of the eyes. It is a pain because I have to trim it almost weekly. I don't trim the nose hair just those hairs right in the very corner of the eyes. |
I too would love to find the solution to this problem. I have been cutting it for now. |

Mimi & Turbo has lighter facial hair & their tear stains are very noticeable, so I trim it w/blunt nosed scissors. It never pokes their eye & it grows fast too! |
I feel your pain Mike. I have the same problem with Lottie her hair is a always getting in her eyes and making them tear up. I use a face flannel and warm water everyday to keep her little face clean, but I would love to find a solution to this problem! |

1tspis milk of magnesia 1tsp corn starch mix into a paste and apply carefully leave on overnight, up to 3 days in a row break and repeat as needed. Also removes 'beef'staining a secret of miniature schnauzer show groomers. Unless its yeats treat with eaw cold pressed coconut oil until yeast is gone then ise the above to remove stains on hair. If it doesn't work its bacterial and requires antibiotics...considering its you though I'd bet its just eye boogie stains. |
Morkie Hey guys. I might be a little off topic but I was curious about something. I just got a morkie. I was looking at her coat and she seems to have an undercoat. She's 8 weeks old. Is this normal, or am I seeing it wrong? She has black and gold hair on her back but when I part her hair, I see fuzzy gold hair underneath. I thought yorkies and maltese only had 1 coat so it just seems confusing. Maybe this is just puppy hair? Any answers would help. Thanks! |

I'd never use peroxide around the eyes... never! Boric acid is in most eye washes... I'd never use contact lens solutions either... too much junk in them... preservatives and such.... |

I know my vet cautioned about peroxide when I listed it as a ' suppliment'we use for my mini schnauzer, but so far we've never had an issue. |

The thing is... some dogs may have an allergy to thimerosol(sp), a preservative used in many eye products, and most of those products sting a little in the human eye, so I can't see my dogs tolerating it too well. Also, warming any solution to be used in the eyes is much more comfortable (for people and pets). I also keep plain eye wash in my emergency first aid kit. Peek got a bite wound inside his lower lid and it swelled up so fast... I grabbed the eye wash and gently rinsed all around and in the eye just before we headed off to the vet's. By the time we got there his eye looked normal... I almost forgot to tell the vet about it as he had quite a few other facial lacerations. He tried to attack Tinkerbell. She opened her mouth (she's 15#, he's 6#) and his head went inside... she did not bite down but he sustained wounds from her teeth on his nose and around his eyes. Nothing major, but due to the location of the wounds and the rapid swelling, a vet check was in order. He healed up fine, no permanent damage... |

I believe that I prolonged Max's eye problems by using sterile saline eye drops to clean hair and things out of his eyes. The preservative in the bottled saline gave him terrible problems. When I started using regular water, the problems went away. |

I'm glad Peek was okay. |

I'll just continue snipping & cleaning their eyes 2-3 x's a day. Turbo & Princess has almost grown out their short cut & Princess can have a top knot again! Turbo has grown out his nose hairs & they don't poke him in the eye anymore.:D |
Systane, Bauch Lamb abd Opticas sensative (my old boss actually uses this one daily) are all preservative free in both eye washes and contact solutions. Children's eye was was suggested-rx specifically for infants...but getting the rx is a bit problematic if its for use in dogs. Ironically a veterinary opthamologist was suggested for inquaries... |

I would think tap water would be irritating, as it contains fluoride, chlorine and other additives to make it healthy for ingestion... IDK. As for those tear stain removal products... the ones I looked at say 'keep out of the eyes'... which is impossible to do (I always get eye makeup remover in my eyes, bc wetness and eyelashes just wick the stuff up into the eye) so I figure the same thing would happen with my dogs' eyes and those products. Even my vet was going to give me Animax AB stuff for Peek's wounds, and I was concerned with getting that in his eyes. So I asked if Opthalmic AB Ointment would also heal the skin around his eyes, as I had to use some in his eyes for the wound inside his lower lid anyway. I also worried that he might start rubbing the area and get the Animax (for skin wounds) in his eyes. She said the Opthalmic Ointment would work on the skin too... so I didn't have to worry... |
The CVS preservative-free eye wash is what I used on Max. I agree that it seems tap water would have horrible things in it that would be more irritating, but the eye wash irritated Max's eyes. |
