A dear dear friend is my groomer. I had my first yorkie when I was in college (1980's). At that time, I wasn't too keen on brushing and pampering every day (actually, nobody was really - times have changed.) So, Rex always had some really bad mats! Anyway, I'd bring my Rex to my friend to groom about every 6 weeks. I'd always be excited when it was time to pick him up. I'd be thinking that my baby was sooo good, sooo wonderful, sooo sweet - and that he'd never be a problem for my friend, the groomer. Well, even before my friend would bring Rex out, she'd come up to the front counter and say, "Tracey, you know what?? Your dog's a #&@*!-head!" Then she'd hand me my Rex with a beautiful Lion shaped head and shaved body. Moral of the Story: It's not ALWAYS the groomer's fault. Some pups do not behave on the table and get the best that can be done. BTW: My friend is a top, experienced, well-known & loved groomer - so I can't blame her. It was me, all me.;) |
Too funny! |
I agree that we do our dogs a disservice by not daily grooming them ourselves. They need to be accustomed to having a comb and brush run through them or they may freak out when they are left at the groomer. Many dogs do actually behave better for the groomer than they do for their owner though. My groomer has new clients with young dogs come in every couple of weeks and they do a little at a time until the pup is used to coming to the place and being handled by the people there. I really think that a lot of pets end up being shaved because that is what most people have done. They only bring those pets in when they are so bad they need to be shaved. |
My boys get winter cuts and summer cuts. In about Sept & Dec they get winter cuts. In March/April & July they get summer cuts, 4 grooms a year. A winter cut is a typical puppy cut. A summer cut is a shave! I want their hair as GONE as possible in the summer months. They wear life jackets and swim in the pool so much I don't want them to have hair, it tangles and they smell more like wet dogs all the time with too much hair in the summer. Fletch has a beautiful coat and I could grow it out. He LOVES to be brushed and will lay in my lap as soon as I get the brush. I could grow his coat out, but he's an active boy for the most part, so I just get it clipped short. Dexter has a cotton coat that mats horribly. He HATES being brushed and I honestly could not deal with it anymore. I just love their round faces, shaved bodies and tipped ears. Too cute for words! :) |

I agree. Once I got all the mats out of Zachary (about a 3 day process after we got him), we started grooming him, everything from shaving ears to blow drying. I am hoping this will help us with our first grooming session tomorrow. Louise |
