Shaved 6 Month Old!! :(( I'm new to the site, but as i have been reading i see i am not the only one to have a SHAVED experience at Petsmart!! I know that my dog (Max) had some matting on his neck and legs..i THOUGHT that was the ONLY areas that would have been SHAVED!! imagine my HORROR when i pick him up after 4 HOURS!! and he was SHAVED!! :mad:REALLY SHAVED!! im trying not to panic and keep saying it will grow back but all his BEAUTIFUL black hair is GONE!! Anyone else with this situation able to tell me how long it took before their dog had at least SOME growth on their body..He is still a CUTIE!!! |
Some grow hair faster than others, my Mia's grows really fast where Brody's is slower growing, but it will grow back. This being toward the start of summer, he and you may come to appreciate the short style, and by fall and winter, he will be even more gorgeous. This might be a good time to shop for clothes to keep him warmer...if not for now, for the future. For now, you wont need to worry much about his hair matting and he can get used to clothes without that concern. Take care! |
OH I HATE PETSMART GROOMING... back when Harrison was about 9 months, I took him to petsmart for his grooming, my first groomer had retired and I was gromminless..LOL well, I was in shock when they called me on the phone and told me he would not be ready for pick up for another hour, so I recluctanly agreed to wait the extra hour, and when finally I got there Harry was shaking and scared, and SHAVED, I know he did NOT had any matts and I had requested a yorkie cut, well i had it, I paid my bill after talking to the manager and walked away from there, and Harry has NEVER been back to any of those places, I looked for a small town friendlier and loving grooming shop.. sorry it happen to you too.. hugs, |
I've read about this dozens of times and it takes place in the first year of grooming. Puppy hair is different and tends to mat much more easily. It's actually much more humane to shave rather than take all the mats out if they are close to the skin. The best way to insure that this doesn't happen again is to get all the mats out before you take to the groomer. Taking mats out can take hours and a groomer shouldn't be expected to do this. Also, after brushing you can comb next to their skin to insure no tangles are left in, which can lead to mats. Joey had problems under his arms, especially after wearing clothing and I always used a little extra conditioner there. Cowboy Magic is another great product for removing tangles mats and stickers. The good news is he’ll have what looks like a “puppy cut” in a couple of months, and you don’t have to worry about the tangles and mats for a while. His adult hair should be easier to care for, but if he's a cotton coated Yorkie, it might be easier to keep him cut short. |
So sorry you had a bad exp with a hairdo, I had one as well. My friend whose daughter was going to grooming school said right before I graduate can I take your boys in, I said ok how bad could it be with a teacher around. Well I was shocked, I think they were three at the time. It was a summer cut so it was always a bit of a shock after winter longer coat was shorter, but oh my, for the first time ever people would say cute dog what is it. My boys were naked. I mean naked, i brushed daily so it wasnt because of matts, she used the wrong tool i guess and had to even him up. Fife didn't care he always pranced around like he was a beauty queen after a hairdo, even after he had his hips replaced and was shaved down he didnt care, but shaffer he didn't want to be seen. The hair grew back same as it always was. saved me on hairdos for a while, no more trims every 4 weeks in the summer. Again sorry for bad haircut but welcome to the club. |
It's sad but some of the pet smart groomers don't seem to know how to do anything but shave a dog down. I suppose a lot of people only take their dogs to the groomer when they need to be cut down so maybe they just assume that everyone wants their pet shaved. I guess how long it takes to grow back depends on how long you want the fur to be. If you want a really long coat it could take a while. A long coat requires daily combing but if grooming is done on a daily basis it is much easier on you and your pet. He will get used to sitting still for you to comb and brush him and you will be able to do it much more quickly because there will be no mats. Look around for a new groomer and ask for references. Ask if they know how to do the various cuts that are usually done for a Yorkie and ask if they will do what you request them to do for you. I have left specific directions of what I wanted done to my dog only to pick her up and find they did the exact opposite. Needless to say I never went back there again. A good groomer should have no problem doing what you request as long as you bring them a dog that has been groomed regularly. I can understand the groomer shaving where there are mats but they really should have checked before they cut him all the way down. Guess he's going to need a sweater for a while. |
Awwwweee. I cried when my Max got his first cut. Same problem! Check out my album. Anyway, it has been a couple of weeks and he looks sooo much better already. The hair on their face starts to look more fluffy and normal after a week. :) |
Here is a pic of Max now. I keep a shirt on him to hide his skinny body but I think he looks great only after 2 weeks. He is 5 months old. |

I am so sorry You guys had such a issue with petsmart... Corky goes there and they are very good with him. Always got the cut we wanted with no issues. |
Yeah this was like our 3rd or 4th time going there and there were no issues before...That was my April Fool's prank i guess..oh well Quote:

I actually think he looks REALLY cute! I was so glad to get rid of that puppy hair, that was always a tangled mess (albeit, a bit sad, but still... short is sooo much easier to care for!) I keep Jackson pretty short year-round, with a rounded face. |
As much as I love the full coat, with three dogs and 3 kids, my dogs are all shaved down here. It's easier, cleaner and we spend more time playing than grooming. I tried growing Elvis' back out but the funky growing in look look unkempt to me so he stays in a pup cut-I just love that look on the boys. |
1 Attachment(s) My foster boy is all shaved, even his face! He was picked up as a stray, and they say he was so matted he had to be sedated to be shaved. He's got a cute face, and will be even cuter when his beard grows in. :) |
aww he is CUTE!! and so little..my max is LOW like that too..i dont mind the body but i cant WAIT for his head and face to grow back..but i definitle see progress and its only been 2 weeks so i will be patient Quote:

Been There! 2 Attachment(s) Our first experience was horrible. I dropped a little dog off and DH brought home a squirrel. |
YES!! so you feel my pain..how long did it take for it to grow back |
I remember the first time my boys get a 'puppy cut' at the groomer. They were about 8 months old. They still had black backs and tan legs and heads. Well under all that black their blue color was coming in, but you couldn't see it. When I went to pick them up after the first groom it was almost shocking. They did not look like MY DOGS! Maybe you are just in shock of your babies color change, but he is 6 months old and his blue should be coming in and the black should be leaving. I thought I hated their shave, but they had it done again and I loved it and now I have it done every time they get groomed. Its so much easier and they seem so much happier without all the hair! |
Thank you so much for that!! i needed to hear that..yeah the color change is A HUGE difference but it has been 3 weeks and i am used to him now..just want his face to grow back in more..but i can tell it is coming in and his hair is more silky than before |
