Default So upset...Topknot woes

When the groomers do a top knot, do they intentionally Matt the hair? I took allies bow out and was going to bathe her. The hair under the bow was matted and tangled around the rubber bands so bad. There were 3 rubber bands in her top knot, and the hair was so matted that even after I cut the rubber bands out, I tried to comb it, used detangling spray, and sat for almost an hour working it through to no avail. I had to cut the whole top knot out. She has several little bald spots, around where the top knot was, where it looks like the hair broke and fell out. Do you think They got it too tight or just didn't know what they were doing and put 3 rubber bands trying to get it to stay?? I am so upset! Hopefully it will grow back quickly.

This happens ALL the time when I put bows in Emma's hair. Now, the hair near the top knot is super short I think it's the rubber band. Now, I used small scrunchies instead and it doesn't hurt their hair as bad. I hope others can tell you more than I can.

I use a 5/16 band and try not to wrap it more than twice. It is very hard to not get some tangled in on the second time around. I usually have to cut the band in several places so her hair isnt broken. I use a plastic comb to get the tangles out,it seems to work better than the wire comb or the brush.

All 3 rubber bands were in there way more than 2 or 3 twists. I had to cut them out in pieces, and they were different colors (that's how I knew there were 3). She looks so bald up there now. But she seems okay with it, I guess I'll have to be too. And hope it grows fast!!!

Could the groomer of had an assistant that maybe didn't really know what they were doing? I mean, topknots/ponytails,just ARENT that tuff to do! I know that sometimes a baby doesn't stay still, that it comes with training. If Mina is being a bit squirmy I dont go for perfection, there is always the next time.

So sorry, hope it grows back quickly.

How long were the bands in her hair? I don't use bands unless we are going out and I want to put a cute bow in Jada's hair. I take it down the same day and then use the little terry scrunchies.
Every time I put a band in Jada's hair even for a little while there is some breakage and tangling. I have found that a rattail comb is the easiest to get tangles out, I use the pick end and very slowly and gently pick the mat apart.
Last year Jada had horrible allergies and kept scratching her head and made a big mat in her topknot hair. I couldn't pick it out it was so huge,so I had to cut it. It took a while but it finally grew back out.

They were small, a little bigger than the bands you would use for braces? There was a pink, a clear and a purple.

Never keep the groomer's bands in the hair or they will matt. I use the small orthodontist bands, but I change them daily. Also never pull a band out. The bands should always be cut. You can use small scissors that have a curve in them to avoid cutting any hairs. They also have bands that are small and say they will not pull hair. They work pretty good. I get mine at Walmart.
Sounds like you left your girl's bow in all week. You must have had a mess. The hair gets tangled in the bands from them moving around and from scratching. Scrunchies will work too, but again they need to be changed daily.

You need to remove the topknot every day, comb and replace in the morning. Otherwise you are going to have a bald dog.

She also sells band scissors.

I'm sorry you had to cut the topknot. It takes time to grow back but it will.

I hate it when the groomers put bands in. I always cut them out first thing when I get home and re-do the topknot myself. I had one groomer put Betty Boop's topknot band in so tight that she couldn't blink or close her eyes! Her eyelids were pulled up so high that the whites were showing! Yes, it was that tight! I always take her bands out at night before she goes to bed.

I purchased nonlaytex bands from Walmart, but they wont stay in Mina's hair. I purchased laytex bands online and they work, before that I was actually using ortho bands leftover from one of my kids braces (loved those, stretched FOREVER). Scrunchies dont stay in Mina's hair either.

it's been my experience that no groomer knows what they're doing when it comes to topknots. At least, none that I have met. The groomers I've taken Kaji to, use regular rubber bands, which matt the hair, and are difficult to remove. I use these for him, Buy Scunci Rubber Bands 22534-A online at CVS.com and they slide out easier and hurt him less. That is when he has a topknot. I don't do it often.

Yes, it was in for 5 days! I didn't know to take it out every day and put it back in. Ugh! So this mess is actually MY fault!!! Poor baby!

Poor girl! So she was a Chinese yorkie??
I will remember these things from now on.
Is there anything I can do or put on it to help it grow faster? I'm starting conformation classes with her and don't want anyone laughing and making fun of the topknotless yorkie....
