Layla's stringy, greasy hair! Layla has really thin, stringy, greasy hair. I wash it and a day later its stringy and it stands strait. Is this perhaps the shampoo/conditioner I'm using? Will this grow out or something? It gets frustrating because people think she's dirty when she's only a few days since her last bath. :/ |
Could be diet/health, or hair products. What brand shampoo and conditioner do you use? |
I use "BOUNCE hypoallergenic coat and body wash with Body Butter" for shampoo. Then I use "BOUNCE Satin Coat conditioning Creme Rinse with Vitamins". The perfume she uses is "BOUNCE deodorizing long lasting refreshing spray." I'm not sure if you or anyone has heard of the products? They sell them at petsmart. |
I'm not familiar with Bounce. I would test another product on your pup and see if it makes a difference. A very popular product line here is Biogroom. You can email them from their website and request free samples. I highly recommend the Biogroom Fluffy Puppy shampoo, Oatmeal shampoo, and Silk Creme Rinse. None of the chain stores carry these products anymore. You would have to order online. For the Silk Creme Rinse, dilute a tiny bit in a measuring cup full of water, mix, and then pour over your pup's back. |
Oily hair could be a dermatitis problem. You may need to change her diet. A home made diet is the best, safest way to go. I wouldn't give her poultry or fish though since they are a major contributor to allergy. What ever shampoo you decide to use, just make sure you rinse, and rinse and rinse again. |

I should clarify that if you use the Silk Creme Rinse, that needs to be rinsed off like any conditioner too. |
I'm feeding her blue buffalo right now. I hope its just her puppy coat type and that she will grow into a different coat. I hopeeee! And thank you, I'm going to look into a different shampoo. :) |
I make sure to not use too much conditioner and really rinse it out. Also the refreshing spray may attract dirt/grease and cause the coat to get dirtier quicker. |

Thank you for this post. My baby has the same type hair. It looks greasy all the time and if I pull a strand of hair up it stays that way. I usually use oatmeal shampoo/conditioner but not helping. I just ordered Everyday Isle of Dogs Silky Coating Dog Shampoo for Yorkies, Jasmine and Vanilla and the same conditioner. I will give that a try. Also I requested a sample from the above website. I am willing to try anything to get her a silky looking coat. |

I think I may be using way too much conditioner. Next bath I will dilute it and hopefully that will help. |
With my 2 that are silky coated I have to be careful not to use a heavy conditioner or they look greasy and stringy. My cotton coated ones I can't use enough conditioner. I would dilute the conditioner a lot see if that helps. |

I just received my free samples from Biogroom. Took about a week from the day I emailed and requested the samples! I didn't get the Silk Creme Rinse, as requested, but I did get Fluffy Puppy and a few other goodies! Guess it's time to clean out the sink and bathe him... |
hmm... 1 Attachment(s) I have run into the same problem..wanted to increase Nemo's shine a little, and ended up looking greasy. With a silky coat it's better to use a very sparing amount otherwise you end up with a dirty look. We won't even talk about when i experimented with VO5 hairdressing....rofl! If you're not feeding homemade food, I have discovered that Taste of the Wild does very well with his coat. I use the Bison and Venison formula, as the Salmon just didn't seem to sit well with him. I think there may have been a little too much oil for his tummy when he was little. Use a good shampoo and conditioner..rinse like crazy. Other than using a little pomade on his topknot while it's still growing (he's only 6 mths old), the only thing I use is Pet Head's Detangling Spray..Love the smell! and it's not too heavy on him. Can't argue with this coat... |
I have recently seen a liter of Yorkie's in a petstore while buying Bee clothes(of course I wanted to take them home) but they all had thin stringy greasy looking hair. so maybe thats just the way Layla is. |

OP just be sure to rinse any product really well. Instead of deodorizer, I use a detangler spray that matches my boy's shampoo. It smells great, and helps with the brushing process. Instead of spraying directly on my pup, I spray his brush. At most I'll spray the brush twice, once to do the top half, and once again for his bottom half. |
[QUOTE=DvlshAngel985;3407156]I doubt the pups in the pet store are clean. Or healthy for that matter. Poor puppies. QUOTE] I know I said the same thing & then I said something to the people who own the store about how they look unhealthy & how I was concerned about their coats & that they need to see a vet(always looking out for Yorkies) all the other puppys looked just bathed & healthy & I always feel so bad for pups in pet stores, but the lady said that they have a vet on site (showed me the office-vet was at lunch) & that tuesdays were bath day & all the puppys got baths the day before, she obviously knew I was serious & was thinking about calling someone because she showed me the tubs & dirty towels, she said that their coats have always looked like that. I looked into it & some Yorkies can have stringier hair I guess. I dont know I was very concerned. my Bee has a normal coat. |

How precious can she be? Well, after reading and posting I went to give my girl a bath. What did I do? Doused her with conditioner again!! This thread completely flew out my head. Her head looks greasy two days later. On a good note I recevied the Isle of Dog shampoo(haven't received conditioner yet). Next week I will bathe again a this time use a small amt of conditioner. That's if my brain doesn't freeze up again! I will let you know something soon. |

I highly recommend trying the Biogroom Fluffy Puppy shampoo and one of their conditioners, especially because you can request samples for free. As noted earlier by others, conditioner/brushing spray can make a pup look greasy, and it attracts dirt. Try to use as little as possible and always put it on the brush, never the pup. Or dab a little in your palm, rub, and then spread lightly over the hair. Last but not least, always rinse shampoo thoroughly. If none of this makes a difference, then it would be time to look into diet changes. |

And I put so much conditioner on her, I HOPE that's why. I can't wait for her next bath. @_@!! I'm going to request the fluffy puppy shampoo. Is there a conditioner you recommend? |

I'm starting to second guess myself as I haven't used it in over a year. It might be 4 parts water. Read the label, it should say the exact proportion there. |

With the Silk Creme, as DvlshAngel pointed out, dilute it big time. I put a little in a measuring cup and then fill the cup with warm water and stir. Then I pour it down my dog's back and rinse. With your pup, you don't need much on her head, just enough to close the hair cuticle after shampooing. Dilute it with a lot of water. |
To Heatherly30, How long did it take to get your Biogroom samples? I emailed them 3 days ago and haven't heard anything. Thanks! |
Ok wow I have been using a LOT. My poor baby! So does she probably have build up? Should I do the soap thing first? I also have a question. Layla is 4.5 months old. I ran into a yorkie puppy who was five months old and her hair was so long! They all grow hair at different rates, right? Layla's hair will grow long eventually...right? (I honestly think I know the answers to all these questions but I need reassurance ) because I can not wait until her hair is long and flowy :) I wonder if the fact that I haven't been bathing her right has to do with her hair not growing a lot? Oh, yes, P.S I sent an email asking for free samples of the fluffy puppy and the silk rinse! |
To Heatherly30, Never mind. I see where it took a week to receive. Need to read your post a little closer. Sorry about that. |
