You are right that they are individuals and do things are their own pace. This includes their hair. ;)

I think you found the cause for all the greasy-ness. Next bath time, just be sure to rinse, rinse, and rinse some more. You don't want to leave any product in their hair. Probably the only thing you might want to leave in is detangling spray. Even then, you don't spray the pup, you spray the brush.

Hair growth is primarily genetics and nutrition. Some coats grow faster than others. A really good pure silk coat will often grow slowly. Between my 2 boys, Teddy's hair grows faster than Max's does.

Your pup could take up to a year for the hair to be flowing, and up to 2-3 years for a full Yorkie coat like you see on show dogs.

My girl has the same hair as I do. Wondering if I need her brush and shampoo/conditioner. LOL As stated, let's give this "minimum" conditioner a try. Oh by the way, I have well water. It's an artesian but I don't care. Trust me, if I go to my mothers in the city and bathe my hair is totally different. I just want to say that Layla is cute as a button. Try some of the suggestions in the thread and see if they help her hair. If not, so be it! She's precious.

Ok so I'm going to give her a bath today. Are there any suggestions when it comes to removing the build up she probably has? Not sure I know how to remove it.

OK, here she is with her frufru in her hair. Thank goodnes she did kiss me when I picked her up. She usually is mad at me for a good while. They only had her for 45 minutes. It's the first time I have ever used them(The Hydrant in Suffolk, VA). They did a pretty good job, maybe I should see what they can do for my hair..LOL. They also have aromatherapy for your pooch(WHAT?) Maybe if she gets into a skunk around here I might try it...ya think? Oh, I received the Isle of Dog Conditioner today, YES, I am excited. I am not sure about what to do for build up but maybe you should switch on and off with a good shampoo. I could be full of hockey and not even know it! I WILL be chatting with you. Have a great day.

I just read your thread and saw this post she is just 4.5 months old! That is your problem. Most silky coated yorkies go through a problem stage with their hair. It looks greasy, stringy when just a day or so from shampoo and it can look pretty crazy, sticking out in all directions. Even putting in a top knot becomes impossible. Luckily, this is their "crazy teenage" time and they DO outgrow it! You will be happy to know it really is a portent of a beautiful coat. I too recommend FLuffy Puppy shampoo and conditioner. It is a nice choice for puppies, the no tear formula is easy on them if they are wigglers and prone to getting suds where you don't want them.

Also don't worry too much about the slow hair growth. They are all different in this regard. If you are lucky, she will continue with slow growth and you can get an extra week or two between groomings when she is an adult. See it is all good.....just have to wait until these things that seem like bad traits show you they are blessings in disguise. ;) She's a cutie!

Now that is some gorgeous proof! It always amazes me the transformations our yorkies go through in such a short period of time. You take the first 3 years of their life and look back on pictures......people who don't know them won't even believe they are the same dogs!

Max & Teddy are adorable at either stage but you have to fall in love with their current coats -- WOW!

I have to agree!! Pups go through stages as their hair changes. Some do get greasy at times and some even start knotting up a lot when the new hair is coming in but the end result is usually great. It is quite amazing the transformation they go through.

Destiny is a perfect example....

The first picture is Destiny at 12 weeks old.

Second is when she was less than a year old, her hair was very stingy and greasy then.

The third picture is Destiny now. She now has a wonderful beautiful silky coat that I just love!!


Oh and Layla is adorable!! From the looks of it I would guess she will have a nice silky coat as an adult. I also agree with the tips you were given on her hair. Make sure you rinse it good and get everything out that is very important.

I received the samples from biogroom everyone! I got the package yesterday. I sent them an email like a week ago requesting the silk rinse and the fluffy puppy samples. I got 3 sample bottles of shampoo- 2 fluffy puppy and they threw in the oatmeal shampoo [which smells icky]. They also gave me a bottle of the ear cleaner. I'm giving her a bath probably on Monday! I will let you guys know how she looks. :3

Thank you for the compliments on Max and Teddy, my little Muppets. ;):):D I'm happy that you can see how much Yorkies change as they mature. You don't necessarily have to have a full coat on an adult Yorkie for the dog to be beautiful. The point here is that the adult hair is almost always superior in quality, texture, and look and feel.

Regarding the smell of the Biogroom Oatmeal shampoo....I first used PetSilk shampoo and conditioner on Max and I loved the scent. When I switched to Biogroom, I thought, yuck! Smells like a salon at a nursing home. :p I loved the results on my boys' hair, so I stuck with it. It's not really that the shampoo smells that bad, it's just a big change from the super sweet smell of other products. However, I do prefer the scent of the Fluffy Puppy on the head.

Don't worry about the "nasty" comment on the other thread. That person has posted unkind remarks on other threads.

Glad you are reassured about your Layla's hair. Don't worry about the other thread either -- that member seems to be having a bad couple of weeks. I went back & read a few of her posts & almost half of what I read had a nasty remark of some kind. She needs to start being nicer to folks or she will find no one wanting to reply to her threads at all.

I really liked how your thread brought out the "transformation" pictures too! I love seeing the changes. I have family all over and we don't see each other near as often as we would like. They have thought I had a new yorkie when it was just a case of them seeing them in different stages. :) We get a lot of variety in one yorkie!

Hey there...I got my samples of Biogrrom too, but I also ordered Isle of Dog...shampoo/conditioner so I tried that first and used very little conditioner and...voila! It worked. No greasy hair. Next time I'll try the Biogroom. Talk to you soon....
