Cutting hair around their yorkies eyes, Why do so many people do this? Looking at so many pics of yorkies I notice that so many of them have the hair cut off around the eye area, not only the short cuts, but even yorkies with long hair. I'm curious to why people do this?. I've never cut Baileys, but Jesse's was cut very short around the eye area when I got him, and I can't wait for it to grow completely out. It's kind of a pain to grow out at a certain stage, because it wants to go in to the eyes  it's getting better then it was though. He'll neve have it cut short like that again, hopefully! :) |
My apologies for posting this in the wrong section! |
I sort of wish I had never done it in the first place. Once you do cut it short, you have to keep doing it as when it grows out just a little, it sticks in their eyes. So, I just keep cutting it now. The first time I had it done, they did not ask me! The groomer just did it. I sort of liked it, opened up his face more and I thought maybe he could see better. But then about 2 weeks later I was regretting it! |
1 Attachment(s) I don't really know - the groomer has always just done it and I don't like when he has those "pokey" pieces that, like, poke him in the eye so I always cut them off. Plus he's always kept short with "bangs" and I don't do topknots so it's easier to just cut it, lol. |

My groomer did this for Roxie, not sure why, but it works for us..lol.. |
It started irritating me that it kept poking lexi in the eye. I told the groomer last time not to cut the top so it can grow out and I can pin it back. It's getting there, but it feels like it's taking forever. I asked someone who came out of the groomers if that's how he likes it, and I guess he didn't care... But it really bothered me that it could of grown out and out of her eyes already if they just didnt touch it. Just trying to use my better judgement...I dont know why people cut it, cause then you have to keep cutting it. |
To my dismay, my groomer did this to Lulu. I told her I wanted to leave her topknot & I thought it was standard when leaving a topknot to NOT cut the hair around the eyes. Apparently not! Anyway, I plan to let Lulu's grow back out. I have some stuff I got from toplinepet.com that I will use to keep it out of her eyes if needed during the awkward phase. |
I prefer to keep Sandy's hair short. We don't keep topknots :) Sandy hates it, so does his daddy. |
I always kept mine long, until one summer came around when my husband was complaining that Coco was mopping up the floor all the time with her hair so long. So I asked for a medium short cut. Now, just like everyone has said, I continue to get it cut because I hate, hate, hate that growing in stage. It looks unkept and ugly, so I now, keep cutting it. I really wish I hadn't started it in the first place. |
2 Attachment(s) I like it...I do keep the top long so I can put her bows in :D...but I think it opens her face up so I can see her pretty eyes, it also helps with the eye burgers and stains. I use a mustache trimer in between groomerings...I think its common in yorkie cuts...I just tell my groomer not to cut her topknots area keep it long, she did however cut the hair on her ears WAY to short "pi**ed me off" its so hard to find a good groomer!! |
Ziva's hair grows toward her eyes, it was always getting stuck to them, even tho it was long. I trimmed it and it was easier to keep directed away. When I got her groomed they cut it really short. It has been cleaner and easier to keep her eyes clean. I am going to try growing it one more time, but maybe some dogs have hair patterns that need the corners trimmed more than others? |

I LOVE her look! she is just gorgeous! Is her body hair long too or do you keep it short? |
It took forever to let all of Thor's hair grow out, and when it did, I realized it was constantly getting into his eyes. His hair is so light and fine, a couple strands would always fly up and get stuck. It looked really uncomfortable. Now I am trying to find a happy medium with short hair around the eyes, but a long mustache. It is a little nerve wracking to cut the hair on the bridge of his nose - I got snub-nosed kiddy scissors for that. He can definitely see much more easily now and I'm not pulling long hairs out of his eyes every few hours. |
