Cutting hair around their yorkies eyes, Why do so many people do this? Looking at so many pics of yorkies I notice that so many of them have the hair cut off around the eye area, not only the short cuts, but even yorkies with long hair. I'm curious to why people do this?. I've never cut Baileys, but Jesse's was cut very short around the eye area when I got him, and I can't wait for it to grow completely out. It's kind of a pain to grow out at a certain stage, because it wants to go in to the eyes  it's getting better then it was though. He'll neve have it cut short like that again, hopefully! :) |
My apologies for posting this in the wrong section! |
I sort of wish I had never done it in the first place. Once you do cut it short, you have to keep doing it as when it grows out just a little, it sticks in their eyes. So, I just keep cutting it now. The first time I had it done, they did not ask me! The groomer just did it. I sort of liked it, opened up his face more and I thought maybe he could see better. But then about 2 weeks later I was regretting it! |
1 Attachment(s) I don't really know - the groomer has always just done it and I don't like when he has those "pokey" pieces that, like, poke him in the eye so I always cut them off. Plus he's always kept short with "bangs" and I don't do topknots so it's easier to just cut it, lol. |

My groomer did this for Roxie, not sure why, but it works for us..lol.. |
It started irritating me that it kept poking lexi in the eye. I told the groomer last time not to cut the top so it can grow out and I can pin it back. It's getting there, but it feels like it's taking forever. I asked someone who came out of the groomers if that's how he likes it, and I guess he didn't care... But it really bothered me that it could of grown out and out of her eyes already if they just didnt touch it. Just trying to use my better judgement...I dont know why people cut it, cause then you have to keep cutting it. |
To my dismay, my groomer did this to Lulu. I told her I wanted to leave her topknot & I thought it was standard when leaving a topknot to NOT cut the hair around the eyes. Apparently not! Anyway, I plan to let Lulu's grow back out. I have some stuff I got from toplinepet.com that I will use to keep it out of her eyes if needed during the awkward phase. |
I prefer to keep Sandy's hair short. We don't keep topknots :) Sandy hates it, so does his daddy. |
I always kept mine long, until one summer came around when my husband was complaining that Coco was mopping up the floor all the time with her hair so long. So I asked for a medium short cut. Now, just like everyone has said, I continue to get it cut because I hate, hate, hate that growing in stage. It looks unkept and ugly, so I now, keep cutting it. I really wish I hadn't started it in the first place. |
2 Attachment(s) I like it...I do keep the top long so I can put her bows in :D...but I think it opens her face up so I can see her pretty eyes, it also helps with the eye burgers and stains. I use a mustache trimer in between groomerings...I think its common in yorkie cuts...I just tell my groomer not to cut her topknots area keep it long, she did however cut the hair on her ears WAY to short "pi**ed me off" its so hard to find a good groomer!! |
Ziva's hair grows toward her eyes, it was always getting stuck to them, even tho it was long. I trimmed it and it was easier to keep directed away. When I got her groomed they cut it really short. It has been cleaner and easier to keep her eyes clean. I am going to try growing it one more time, but maybe some dogs have hair patterns that need the corners trimmed more than others? |

I LOVE her look! she is just gorgeous! Is her body hair long too or do you keep it short? |
It took forever to let all of Thor's hair grow out, and when it did, I realized it was constantly getting into his eyes. His hair is so light and fine, a couple strands would always fly up and get stuck. It looked really uncomfortable. Now I am trying to find a happy medium with short hair around the eyes, but a long mustache. It is a little nerve wracking to cut the hair on the bridge of his nose - I got snub-nosed kiddy scissors for that. He can definitely see much more easily now and I'm not pulling long hairs out of his eyes every few hours. |
Perfect timing or me....I am at a loss at what I should do..I read all the great reasons to cut it, I think yep I am cutting it..then I read about letting it grow and think Yep letting it grow...lol..can't make up my mind...Shays grows right into his eyes, and I cant seem to be able to keep the top knot done right and he gets it out, easily..grrrrr! So, I understand right....you shave the hair between eyes? or cut it? and how far down the nose? I have been online searching for days, for instructions on how to do it, if I decide.....and cant find a clear cut (no pun included lol) answer |
Cutting at the eyes is usually some groomer's idea...one which would be unfamiliar with how the coat is supposed to be kept. If you let it grow out..it will lay down and not get in the dog's eyes. Yorkshire Terrier - Dog Pictures |
I cut it for Natalie cause it sticks to her eyes and looks oh so painful but Charlie has not had that problem. His seems to grow away from his eyes but then I usually keep him cut short. I have been letting Natalie's hair grow out and she is getting use to a top knot. At least now, she don't try to pull it out as fast as I put it in. She keeps it in all afternoon long and i take it out at night. |
The last groomer I took Roxie to shaved her nose and kept all her facial hair a bit longer, I too am wishing I would have just left it the way it was when it was longer it was far less trouble. If I had it to do over, I would have left her in a long cut with long hair everywhere...lol.. |
I like it cut short but mine are groomed every 3 months so it for the most part stays short. I think its just a matter of preference |

I keep it kinda long...Hubby doesn't like the puppy cut so I try to do a happy medium :D |
That is what I had been doing. I thought I was doing an adequate job of keeping Maddie's hair out of her eyes at this horrible irritating stage. We LITERALLY just walked back in the door from an emergency trip to the vet (ok, yes, I panic a lot so my vet is getting used to our "emergency" visits). Anyway, when I was brushing her out today I saw that her left tear duct was swollen and irritated. Of course, I start looking things up on the internet and find this "cherry eye". Well, I have to make sure this is not the start of that... Don't ask... I very well could be crazy. LOL... Anyway, turns out the tear duct is just irritated because of, yes, you guessed it... her hair!!! Vet told me I have no choice but to keep her hair trimmed short around that area since it was cut short awhile back. And, to top it off, we now have to wear a cone and have an eye creme until the infection is completely cleared up. This is just our experience but wanted to so if you are trying to grow it out perhaps you can be even more cautious than I thought I was already being. (((sigh))) Peggy, Monkey & Maddie :daisy: |

I have always found cutting around the eyes caused more problems with hair in the eyes and let the weight of the hair pull it down away from the eyes on my girls. No matter how much I stressed to groomers to not cut the hair, it happened on more than one occasion. I ended up doing all of their grooming myself when one of my girls got hurt seriously, so that eliminated this problem for me, as well. It is difficult to train the hair to stay out of the eye, but I think it winds up being better for them. I think they look adorable with the hair cut around the eyes, too, but I found it scary to constantly keep cutting the hair to prevent it from going in the eyes. |
I am trying so very hard to be patient and let Levi's hair grow out around his eyes. His hair was very short when I got him, so I've always just had his face trimmed back but it is such a constant thing. When his facial hair is cut, a couple of weeks later there is hair poking him in the eyes again. It kills me how unkempt his face looks right now, ha. I don't like the hair in his eyes, so I'm trying to solve the problem once and for all by letting it grow out...and not caving and cutting it short like I usually do! But I feel guilty to think it is impeding his vision. |

I groom my own but I notice alot of groomers always cut that hair. I wonder why. I remember taking one in years ago to a groomer and was ticked that she shaved the bridge of his nose by his eyes. |
I can't picture how this would work for a Yorkie with short hair though w/ no top knot? Does anyone have a picture?? Like if I let Jackson's hair from between the eyes grow out, where would that hair go or lay? I guess I do the 'bang' style on him. |

Her ears look to have been tipped, which is a very common thing to do with yorkie ears. I personally think it looks much better than having hair growing all over them. She is a doll, by the way. :) |
As for trimming by the eyes, I believe it depends on the pup. Some of mine are left long...and others are trimmed. |

For a dog with a short cut, I think a long hairy face would look a little silly.:p We cut the hair around the eyes to go with the short body cut. I think the face cut should match the rest of them. :) Either way, I have yet to see a Yorkie that wasn't a cutie. |
