| Complete Grooming Guide A groomed yorkie is a healthy yorkie, and a healthy yorkie is a happy yorkie. You want your yorkie to be happy and healthy right? In this guide I will talk (well, type really)you through how to groom your yorkie with a long coat and a short cut. If I ever find out how to post videos (I dont have a youtube account) then I will make a video along with this to help you. Good luck! Lets start first with the short cut. If you have decided to let a professional cut your yorkie or cut your yorkie yourself, most likely that cut will be the traditional puppy cut. Look at a picture of a 12 week old puppy and you get the idea of how the cut looks. Step 1: Pre-Groom. Always untangle all those mats and tangles out with your fingers and/or a doggie brush before giving your dog a bath. Why? Because if you dont, the water will just make the tangles bigger and harder to get out. Step 2: Prepare. Make sure you have all the supplies you need when bathing your dog right next to the bath tub or sink. Here are the things you need when bathing your yorkie: a. tearless doggie shampoo (human shampoo is too harsh on them) b. doggie conditioner c. 2 towels (one small, one medium) d. large plastic cup Put the small towel on the bottom of the sink/bathtub so your yorkie doesnt slip and slide around, but make sure it doesnt cover the drain- most animals dont like water rising when they are in it. Step 3: Bathe. Turn on the water and let it run untill it is lukewarm. Place your yorkie carefully in the sink/bathtub and squirt some doggie shampoo in your hand. Rub it together in your hands, then start rubbing gently, but making sure to actually clean the dog, on his/her head. Do The Face Last. Wash your dog in this order: Head, Body, Tummy, Legs, Tail and Genitals. After you shampoo their whole body, except the face, use the plastic cup to rinse them. Do not make them stand under the tap. Now for the face. For this make sure the doggie shampoo is tearless. squirt a small amount on your hands and rub together. This is the part my yorkie hates most. Gently get the face in your view so you can see what you are doing. Massage the face with the shampoo. Try not to get it in the eyes, mouth, or nose. Again, use the plastic cup to rinse. Dry her/him mostly with the mediam towel. Step 4: Brush. Use a brush that wont hurt your yorkie to brush his/her fur and to dry it. Depending on the lenghth of fur your yorkie has, you probably wont have to brush for very long. Step 5: Check. Look over your yorkie to make sure nothing is wrong. Check his/her gums, teeth, nails, genitals, skin, and etc. If his/her nails need to be clipped, proceed to step 7. You should try to brush your yorkies teeth every day, if you dont know how, proceed to step 6. Step 6: Brush Teeth. Go to the petstore and find a toothpaste (preferably a flavored one your dog likes) and a finger tooth brush. Put the finger tooth brush on your finger (obviously, lol) and squirt a small amount of tooth paste on it. Open your dogs mouth and try to put your finger in there and smear it around inside their mouth. This is the part most dogs hate. If your dog just wont let you do that, let him/her lick/eat a little bit of toothpaste. I have also heard of a kind you can put in their water. I haven't tried it though. Step 7: For clipping your yorkies nails you will need a nail clipper and some syptic powder. Hopefully you will not need to use the syptic powder. (sorry, I dont know how to spell syptic) Most yorkies have black nails, or will when they are older. Black nails make it harder to clip the nails because you can't see the quick. In case you dont know what the quick is, it is the nerve filled thing inside the nail. If you cut the quick, it will bleed and you can put syptic powder on it to help it stop. Because you cannot see the quick with black nails, only cut off a little tip at a time. That way, it is harder for you to accidentally cut the quick. Make sure the clippers you use are not the kind that you put the nail inside a hole and crush down. Those kind can make cracks in the nail that could lead up to the quick and be painful for your yorkie. Below, I have a picture of the clippers I use. Step back and admire your work! Now for those of you who have decided not to cut your yorkies fur. Follow steps 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 of the short cut steps. Keep in mind that if you ever do decide to cut your yorkies fur, it will cut the blue part right off, and you wont be able to show your dog. Here is step 4 for long coats. Step 4: Brush. Brush all the way throught your yorkies long coat and get all the mats and tangles out. Make sure you brush him/her daily. If you want, you can put a topknot in his/her hair to keep it out of his/her face. here are the steps to making a topknot: Step 1: Choose to do the singe band, double band, or triple band method. I usually do the double band method. Step 2: Single Band Method: Take all the hair in face up as if you were making a ponytail. Put it in an almost complete ponytail. Just before the last pull, knot, what ever you call it, dont pull it all the way through so it makes a bun. Then use a clip-on bow to make it look pretty. Step 3: Double Band Method: This is the more complicated and fancier method. I usually use the double band method. Do the same as the single band, but dont make it a bun, make it a ponytail. Then, higher up on the same ponytail of hair, make another ponytail. take the second down behind the first to form a "fake bun" as I call it. PLace the clip-on bo in front to keep them together. Step 4: Three Band Method: This is the final method that I never use, but might be good to start with before you do the double band method. Do the same as the double band method but before you put the bow on put anoter band around the first two, holding them together. Place the clip-on bow on. I hope this helped! |
