Would you dye your dog? I'm guessing most people here wouldn't consider dyeing their dogs because the color wouldn't show up againt the coat. Thor is very pale, and I think a color would show up very strongly. I think it might even be more interesting because his body is pretty grey, and it might make an interesting contrast. I'm thinking about dyeing Thor for Easter... maybe pink and yellow, or pink and blue. Something like an Easter Egg. We will probably be walking in a yorkie parade on Sunday, and I want him to stand out. :) I haven't done this before, but it looks like you can use food coloring. Opinions? Suggestions? Experiences? |
hmm I've never been in favor of dyeing any animal...chicks rabbits or anything...I'm sorry I think yorkies are beautiful the way they are and we don't know the effects on them....why not just buy him a cute easter outfit to make him stand out? |
Can I ask why you don't believe in dyeing dogs? I've heard that dyed chicks or rabbits can die soon after the experience, but from everything I've read, for dogs it's basically giving them a bath in colored water. You can buy a professional dye, but even that is nothing like human hair dye. Most people just use food coloring or sugarless Kool-Aid. It's completely harmless. Why is dyeing a dog so different from having it wear a special outfit? Both are unnatural. . . . . . I just want to add that I am doing tons of things to give Thor a full, rich doggy life. I give him good food, we go to the park almost every day, I practice obedience with him, and I am taking him to doggy daycare to help him interact with other dogs. I absolutely appreciate him as a dog. I think these extras are just silly fun. |
oh no I have no bad reason I just don't do it and like yorkies coloring...I'm not judging sorry if it came across that way...I just think that dressing them up is cuter and more noticable...I've never heard anything bad that it will do to them. |
No, I guess I'm just being a little defensive. To be honest, I REALLY want to do it. I've seen some really neat-looking colored dogs. Have you seen the "panda" dog? However, my impression is that most people think it's cossing the line, which makes me sad, because as I said, I'm dying (or dyeing? Ha!) to do it. |
I think a couple of pink streaks might be cute! I think I remember a story somewhere about a woman who was arrested or at least seriously harassed for dying her white dog pink. She did it for cancer awareness or something . There was a pink maltese on Dog whisperer to. I bet you saw that one! Be careful, you never know who's out there watching! Thor seems more the bunny ear type!:p |
Yes, some people dye their dogs pink in honor of breast cancer awareness. And yes, I did see the pink maltese on the Dog Whisperer, ha! I totally expected Cesar to smack her silly, but I don't think he said a word. I was surprised, because one episode that stood out for me (first season?) was the two young gay men with a toy dog named "Paris". They dressed the dog up all the time, but hadn't done any obedience with it. Cesar told them they were being selfish and not acknowledging the dog's doggy-ness. I wouldn't keep Thor permanently pink, but I guess I think it would be cute for special occasions. |
I did a search on "dyeing" (dying) and got some interesting threads/posts. Give it a try. My preference would be to dress Thor in an "Easter" outfit. |

Use dog dye... |
no I haven't seen the panda dog but I'll google it...be sure to post pics if you do it... |
i wouldn't do it. it is probably all chemicals in the dye. |
Dyeing Thor for Easter is a cute idea! You must post pictures for us to see!:D Doggie dyes are safe & washes out easily. |
I personally wouldn't dye mbe because they are dark and I like their color, although I wish rylies blue was a little darker on his back half. But so far as dying a Fun color: as long as you use a dog safe product, why not. Go for it. If I had a white poodle I might dye it pink LOL |
1 Attachment(s) We did Thom for Easter :) He sat very still for me, he knows when grooming time comes up, mama is just making him pretty! He matches his blue sweater now! And its just koolaid (i did research it before i did it of course!), so will wash out fairly quickly! When we took him out for his walk, he paraded around like he was just the most HANDSOME dog! :animal36 We have a ton of family events tomorrow, and wanted him to look neat for our families :) |

Someone on here (can't remember who) dyed their yorkie pink. To be honest I thought it looked ridiculous JMO. I can't find the thread though. Naturally there were very irate members, just so you know! |
Shoot...we color OUR hair...permenantally!!!!! So why not our pups with a temp???? I think Thom is just so cute!!! GO FOR IT! Post pics! |

As long as you do it, make sure it something safe for them to eat, ie koolaid w/o sugar or food coloring :D |

I guess im still too much of a "hippy" to understand the lashing at differences in society. |
I would just be a little cautious due to skin irritations or whatever. I personally wouldn't dye my dog's hair just because I think it's a little too silly (no offense, JMO) and I'm just worried about reactions, especially with Chip cause he's sooooo sensitive to everything. JMO. If you want to do it, then obviously, go ahead. You know what would be cute? Blue and green! |
Well, Thor appears to have made the decision for me. Poor little guy got a very upset tummy this morning and I took him to the vet. They told me he might have a virus and to keep him away from other dogs. So no parade for us. :( He seems perfectly fine now, but I still need to give the vet a stool sample and I don't want to risk infecting 40 other dogs. What Thor doesn't realize is that July 4th is coming up, and he's going to spend the day in red, white and blue. MWA hahahahaha. I think Thom looks fabulous. I don't know if it's just the picture, but he looks very tough and punk. |
I'm watching 'Groomer Has It' and they are dyeing poodles all kinds of crazy colors. I'm loving it. |

Sure as long as it could be done safely. It wouldn't really show up on Ellie though. Maybe I should get a Maltese??? |
I dyed Mitzy's topknot pink with koolaid. Its real easy and safe. I did LOADS of research on it and actually did my hair first (in the back LOL). You should also do a test patch before you do all over color. I got 2 packs of koolaid mixed it with conditioner and made it into a paste and applied it during her bath. I washed it out after a few minutes and it faded within days, she didnt even notice it was in her hair. You can see slight peices of pink in her topknot in our avatar but its gone now. Took about 3-4 baths to completely wash out, however she is white so im sure her hair took better to it. Toothpaste is supposed to take it out too or lighten it.. |
Your maltese is too cute with the pink! How cool! I love it! hhhmmmm, Coco is really light colored....:) |
I thought Thor was cute and punk. I love to see mohawks and love them even more when owners let me give their dogs a mohawk. Would you happen to have a front shot of Thor? In the past I use to dye my 1st poodles topknot with food coloring. She had orange for Halloween (she was a pumpkin) and red for Christmas. |
absolutely ryans pet supply has pet dyes even stencils to do it! |
1 Attachment(s) my yorkie got into dye when I was doing some tye dying. He walked clear up to the bowls and put one paw in the pink bowl and the other paw in the blue bowl. and then just stood there. I was in shock. Lucky he didn't run off and track blue/pink paw prints in the house. Well needless to say he stayed that color for quite sometime. Although I DO NOT reccomend using tye dye. I know there is dye specifically made for dog dyeing. DO IT!!! Who cares what people think. I take my pup to Petsmart and the dog park as often as I can and while he was pink/blue I got lots of laughs and compliments LOL. Have fun and be safe! I included a pic. Excuse the DORK (me) holding the ADORABLE pup. Yeah I forgot my gloves. I was pink and blue for about 1 month. |
I gave my Buttons a green Mohawk once. I used food coloring, because I wanted something a deep color on his light grey hair. It turned out very nicely and he never experienced any skin problems. And I thought it went very nicely with his spike collar!!! He got sooo many compliments :) |
