when will my yorkie's hair color change My yorkie is 8months and her hair on her head is starting to turn grey/silver. Does all her black hair turn silver? I've noticed other yorkies have all tan hair. What colors were they originally? Just curious. |
My yorkie is head is starting to turn gray too. She is only 3 1/2 months. I saw her Mom and Dad and they where not gray. Will gray be her color or will it change again? Just wondering too. |
4 Attachment(s) Yorkies are like chameleon dogs... they change colors all the time. It's a big surprise all the time! My big yorkie, Smokey, was a dark dark grey to the point where he was almost black, but you could see light silver roots. Well, we got him cut down and he has been all silver for about 8 months now, but now I notice he's getting the dark grey color back! My other one, Chip, was mainly black when we brought him home and now his head and paws are all tan and his saddle is black, but has silver "highlights" as I like to call it. . Here are their pictures. The first one is of Chip at age 8 weeks and the second one was a few months ago. The third picture is of Smokey at 6 months when we first brought him home and the fourth picture is of Smokey a few months ago. |
The grey/silver on their heads usually turns to gold...and the black on their backs turns to silver. It can take up to 3 years for their coloring to change completely. |

Yep, mine was pretty much changed by 6 months . . . but now it seems to be changing a little bit again. Originally she was nearly all black except her feet and chest which was a dark tan. She had a splash of white on her chest as well as a few dozen hairs on her chin. Then, her head and feet turned to a strawberry blonde and her back was a dark steel blue. Now her head is much brighter blonde, her face a little darker strawberry blonde and her back is a dark grey. I'm not sure what color her back will be though, since I cut it in October and it is just now coming back in and started changing a bit once again. It seems to be a little darker steel blue with streaks of dark grey. Who said chameleon? They were surely correct. She is 14 months old now. I actually love that it changes alot. . . but then I haven't found one thing I don't love about my Sophie! |
Bella has changed A LOT at 7 months... 2 Attachment(s) ...but I think she has more changing to do...and I can't wait! :) |
Wow Bella sure has changed. She is a cutie. |
Bella's Mom, I just saw you live close to me, By any chance did you get Bella from a breeder in Monroe? That is where I got my Bella. I know it's a long shot but just thought I would ask. |

Thanks so much for clarifying everything up. I kind of like the silver look better so I'm excited how my little Bella is going to turn out. |
Gracie's hair changed at around 6 months. As for Holly, only her head hair has changed. The rest is black and tan, just the way it was when I got her at 12 weeks. |
My puppy's hair change 2 Attachment(s) I have a 6 month old yorkie that is almost completely silver/grey. My other 2 year old yorkie still dark black and tan. It's really weird. They are both completely beautiful though. I am waiting for Ace (2 year) to get greyer and who knows what color Jack will be. Maybe he will be compeltely white who knows! |
Welcome! first of all, to you and Ace and Jack. I would think Ace is the color he is going to be, at 2 yrs I don't think you will see much if any more changes. Jack, well he is only 6mths so he could go darker as he ages to a nice deep blue but again since he is so light already at 6mths I would think he will get a little lighter. They are both adorable and I am sure what ever color much loved. |
Twinkle's head was a very pale silver at about 3 or 4 months but is completely blonde now, so are her legs and chest. Her back is silver. Her colouring is very pale, which I know isn't standard, but I think it's really pretty:) xxx xxx |

2 Attachment(s) First pic.......Beatrice at 3 1/2 months Second pic......Beatrice at 16 months |
2 Attachment(s) Chloe lost alot of the black on her face but her reddish tan is still the same as when we got her. She is still black on her back. She may be a tiny bit lighter. I'm not sure , but she looks the same to me. Aside from the black on her face growing out, her coloring hasn't changed all that much. And only after her haircut when the black tips were gone on her face , did she start to look different to me. below she was aprox. 4 months (1st photo) and now 10 months ( 2nd photo) Her hair is starting to look a bit lighter tan on top so who knows  It's fun to see her change ( even just a little) I wonder if I shaved her down what color she would be ? Nah , I will just wait and see :D |
Ace looks like he is happy in this pic - he is very handsome |
thanks!! Thanks! That picture just describes his personality to a 'T'! He is very handsome, thanks for the compliment, that's so sweet! |
How precious is she!!!! She is so cute. |

My new baby Timmy, (seen in my avatar or in my album) is supposedly about 3 yrs old according to the shelter and the vet said that should be about right based on his icky teeth. However, i have never seen a yorkie on anything that looks like him. He is black with tan legs and his head is basically calico looking. His face next to nose does look like it may be turning a bit silverish, but i was wondering if some yorkies dont change colors, or if he still has time? Being from a shelter, theres no way to really verify his age, and most ppl say he looks younger, but like i said vet said he needs his teeth cleaned, but he looks to be that age to the vet. Anyway, basically just curious if anyone has seen a yorkie that looks like him before or if this is the normal time to start changing colors? he's also shedding chunks of black fur, so i was wondering if that is normal also?! I almost wonder if he may be a mix of some kind, but he was used for breeding apparently so i dont see how he could be... Either way i love my Timmy:D |

Nice of you to take him in & love Timmy. I cannot see a photo of him to answer. I can give a good guess from photos. Although yorkies don't shed it's possible that he's shedding b/c he was in the shelter. It could be malnourishment, allergies, hyperadrenocorticism, stress, or things like Eczema, Hypertension or many other things. Dogs that do shed don't shed in this manner. Its easier to go by features. Based on the little info you wrote, sight unseen I would guess he may be a mix of a poodle and yorkie. But that's a hairball guess, don't read into it. Calico reminds me of the mixes that you sometimes get with these two. This mix can appear younger if they get the poodle looking eyes. Yorkshires rarely look old. Don't hold into him being used as a stud to decide. I know you don't care. You just would like to know. But they will breed anything. Did they leave him there or was he picked up? If you post more photos I will tell you. The teeth are the best guess that the vet has. |

A shaved down yorkie is always going to appear darker than they really are. Never look at a photo of one and think that this is the real color. |

No poodle there. He's pretty much a yorkie. Does he have a wooly or cotton like coat? I'd expect his coat to stay dark. If you want him to look more like a yorkie you can use and groom him differnt and use other products. There are so many things it could be. The vomit and hair loss may or may not be related. Keep the communication with the vet. |
