| Grooming My Yorkie ok so today Canella is 5 months old and i just read that girls post about her yorkie's teeth and had a couple questions about grooming...i try to brush canella every day but sometimes it is every other day i get worried about her matting so i just take the precaution and brush her...and i give her a bath once a week...is that too much?...sometimes i even feel like she gets too dirty before the week is even over but i dont wanna over do it...and when should i start brushing her teeth?...i read in a book i can start at about 6 months...is that right?...and when i give her a bath she will not stop moving around and sometimes water gets in her nose and she tries to sneeze it out but how am i supposed to clean her good without cleaning around her mouth?...is it bad if water gets in their ears?...how can i make her like the bath?...ok i know this is alot to ask but i would love to get everyones suggestions... Thanks, Canella's Mommy |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome. I bath mine every couple pf weeks to avoid drying out there skin but I know a lot bathe weekly. I try to brush them and their teeth everyday but miss a day hear and there, the sooner you start getting them use to teeth brushing the better. Try not to get water in their ears if possible. I use a wet wash cloth on their heads to avoid pouring water on their heads. The more you do it the easier it gets and they get more use to it,

| advice from a groomer... Brush her as much as you can. If you can, buy a quality "pure boar bristle" brush and use that daily, it will bring out the natural oils in her skin which will make a healthy, shiny coat and repel the dirt. I highly recommend the "Mason Pearson" pure boar bristle brush. You should not bath her more than every 10-14 days. Avoid the use of creme' rinse as it has wax in it and can clog the pores on a long haired dog, causing itching and dry skin. Even creme' rinse that is made for dogs. If you must use a conditioiner, be sure you dilute it by 50-75% with water, and rinse, rinse, rinse to get it all out. As for teeth, start brushing now, and I start pups on tooth brushing at 10- 12weeks to get them used to it...It is never too soon. Be sure you use a gel made for pets. I use and recommend OXY FRESH tooth gel. Do a web search for a distributor near you. I hope this helps. If you have any other grooming questions, feel free to contact me directly at: doglady21@comcast.net I hope this helped you. Sue & Cricket Quote:

| I bathe every week and do all the grooming at that time. I put them in a laundry room sink that is deep and use a spray hose that attaches to my sink faucet. The old-fashioned rubber kind. the spray is gentle and not so frightening to them and you can avoid the face. To wash their head I hold both ears closed with one hand and gently spray the top of the head, avoiding letting the water run into their eyes or nose. I use my fingers to gently wipe water across the bridge of the nose and under the eyes. Brush their teeth with C.E.T. toothpaste which you can get at your vet. It is liver flavored and they seem to like it. It leaves a little film on the teeth which fights bacteria. If you brush at night before bed and after the last meal, it is just like kids brushing before bed and they have several hours bacteria-free. There is a brush you can get at Petco that is 3-sided. That way you brush each side of the tooth with every swipe. And when they are not cooperating that can be useful. C.E.T. also makes a chewy that helps with the bacteria when you can't brush. But I'm not sure how young you can use it, and you shouldn't use it more than once a week. Any brushing is helpful, whatever you can do. But some dogs have a real problem with plaque and should be brushed every day to avoid professional cleanings that have to be done under anesthetic and are very expensive. Good luck!!

I would love to get one of those hoses that attaches to the faucet. Which one did you purchase and where did you buy it?
