Cottony/Silky Coats...Here's How to View The Difference

why those with cottony coated Yorkies always have problems brushing them

I don't know about that. Tucker's coat is wavy, but i suppose not curly, after a bath and I never have to brush him to keep his coat looking nice. he has never gotten matted and has fairly long hair. I guess I still don't know what his coat type is, but it definitely isn't high maintenence. It feels soft and silky, yet it isn't perfectly strait.

I have heard that some with a cottony/wooly texture are extremely high maintenence though and that they can't grow out a long coat.

Bogey is a mixture (I guess) The front of him is straight & silky ,the back end is curly & wavy. I think he's Beautiful !!

That's true...Brooklyn has a cottony coat, and I never have trouble brushing her...it's just very THICK...like when you pour water over her back to get her wet in the bath it just rolls right over the top...

I'm so confused! Smokey's hair is one of those that you can let him dry off on his own and he still looks like a million dollars. He doesn't even really need brushed because his hair is thin, straight, etc. The feeling of his hair though is a bit more "coarse" than Chip's. Chip's you need to brush and work with so it will lay flat and even then it's all over the place and wavy, but that's also his puppy hair. His face has his adult hair and it's extremely silky feeling lays flat and is very thin. So which one is which? Chip looks like the yorkie on the right (but not as curly) and Smokey looks like the yorkie on the left after a bath.

On my photo Teddy has the Cottony coat!!! Its' very curly when wet. Tiffanies' in the the back and has a VERY HEAVY THICK silky coat straight as a board straight!!! So heavy and thick no pony tails would keep her bangs out of her eyes so I never let them grow out couldn't stand it in her eyes! And Tiffanies if I used the wrong conditioners on her it would look greasy. Hope this helps U some!

Well that is the way Teddy is!! LOL!!! If I don't put something on it when he walks in the back everyone makes fun of him and says he looks like a skunk ready to strike! LOL! I love it tho!! I think all cottony coats are beautiful!! Really I do! I can get enough of them!

Teddys' coat has been longer but I let him wear a belly band that wasn't made for his coat and it got ALL matted up before I knew it last summer and I just cut it down, U talking growing fast coats well my Teddy does! I don't think they are that bad as far as maintenence just have to brush every other day and make SURE I get under his coat not just the top, and he just loves to be brushed if I stop god love him he's pawin' at me to do more, let me flop him on his back and all, leaves his pony tails up, well once in a while he'll paw it out if he's mad at me and then I say Teddy what have U done and he looks at me with his bangs 1/2 out and all fuzzed up like a wild man and then I just laugh at him and put it back up, sometime I think he does it to get me to put it back up...He's my little man tho and 100% a pleaser!!! Now we're growing "Trying" to grow all our coats out!!!! 5 of them I love tending to them all 5!!! It is a full time job tho, I have 2 males: 1-3 year old, 1-20 month old, 3-females: 1-10 months old and 2- 8 month olds...Those 8 month olds are worse then a set of twins they are sisters but let me tell U they are always up to something!! LOL!

I don't think that is true with all Yorkies. Diesel has what they call a modified coat. Some of it is silky and some is cottony. I have known some Yorkies that have curly hair and the coat is very silky. So it varies from Yorkie to Yorkie.
