Has anyone gotten a puppy from Sportsman Kennels in Long Island? I was searching on google for breeders in new york city and I came across the website for Sportsman kennels and I wanna know if it's good or bad. This is the site link, http://www.sportsmanskennels.com. |
Hi There! My friend got her yorkie there several years ago. She wasn't AKC registered, some other kind which i've heard can be shady and she said now that she looks back, that seemed wierd. Her dog is adorable, prettty solid and very sweet. Funny thing is, her dog doesnt know how to bark and her tongue hangs out b/c its so long, but i think she is just as cute as can be! I have looked all over this area and i had to go elsewhere to find a place i was comfortable with. She said the placed seemed fine, but when i asked if she would go back, she said she wasnt sure. Hope that helps a bit!! |
Way to many breeds! |
Hi I am not sure were they get their puppies from. I agree way too many breeds. If you can't see the parents on the premises I would run the other way. I live on Long Island. I show my yorkies and sometimes breed. I don't know what your looking for BOY OR GIRL. I will be expecting a litter in July. My yorkies are all spoiled rotten like they should be. I also have one that is 1 year old & too small to show, she's a sweetie. She plays high 5 with her paw, which is soooo cute. |
Yeah, I don't think i'll get a dog from sportsman kennels then. Jolissa, are you near the LIRR by chance? |
I am about 10 minutes from the Ronkokoma station. I will send you pictures if you would like to see her tommorrow. |
PLEASE do not buy from this place. They are either a puppymill or a broker who gets their dogs from mills. Whenever you see so many breeds this is a sure red flag that it isn't good. Check out rescue Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten. or if you want a puppy go to the for sale forum and investigate some of the better YT breeders. We have quite a few that are good and will be able to help you out. Elaine |
HOLY S**T That place is about 20 minutes from me....I NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS thought there could be some sort of mill or mill importer/broker like that here on Long Island    PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE FROM THERE - As everyone has stated, that's just WAY TOO MANY BREEDS - Very Fishy :( :( :( |
I purchased my first pug from there! (I obviously did not know any better) my second pug was a gift/surprise and he too came from there. My hubby's partner got his Schnauzer from there as well. All three have died from cancer! Had I known then what I know now of course I never would of bought from them! |

This is heart breaking. I 100% believe she DOES have a shunt. Liver shunt doesn't mean a death sentence. Liver shunt surgery is very successful. It sounds like you have done a lot of research already which is really good. If she will refund you the money, I would take it. Use it for the surgery. Have you looked into Cornell University Vet School or University of Tenn ??? Both are leaders in Liver Shunt surgery and research and offer VERY reasonable Liver Shunt surgeries. Someone not too long ago said they had LS surgery done at U of Tenn (spay, and ALL tests necessary, and the LS surgery and hospital stay) for approx. $1300 Since Cornell is in NYS, you should check them out as well. This is NOT an infection. And this place is a Puppymill. Who is "their" Vet anyway? I live out east and I would LOVE to know which Vet is supporting this horrid place. I know alot about LS and MVD, so please let me know what else I can help you with???? |
You can also have your Vet run a Protein C test. This will also give more confirmation that there is indeed a Liver Shunt. The Protein C test is a blood draw that MUST be overnighted to Cornell University. The results are done at Cornell and usually take a few days. Results come back in a % 80% and above are either normal liver or MVD (sorry, but it really can not be accurate for normal or MVD - just a guildline). However.... Below 80% is pretty accurate for Liver Shunt :( |
Makes me think puppy mill... #1 Red flag: when a breeder has more than one breed. #2 Red flag: KENNEL-can't stand the word...wouldn't want to be associated with it... |

[QUOTE=Nancy1999;2667786]I guess you're not alone, one person wrote that he wouldn't buy a dog registered with the AKC because the organization had the word "Kennel" in their name. Unfortunately, he believed that APRI, was a respectable registry, but it was actually started by commercial breeders, and stands for American's Pet Registry Inc. Maybe it's a friendlier name, but don't let that fool you, it's free to commercial breeders, and dogs sold in Pet Stores are often registered with them. "Kennel" use to be an extremely respectable word, and only associated with breeders with the most knowledge, sorry to hear the word leaves a bad taste in some people's mouth. So beware of the spin-doctors, who make something sound cute and cozy, like anything with the word "pumpkin" or "pumpkin patch" :D as well as those who try to sound respectable.[/QUOTE Yep, I understand...thanks... |

happy client :animal36 after reading all of these posts i realize that you cannot believe all you read on the computer. i purchased two dogs from sportsmans kennels and never had a problem . when i went in is was a very nice place much better then other places i have visited. The staff was very helpful and informative , and the puppies were clean and happy. i know a few people who have bought dogs from them also and it was a very enjoyable experience. all i can trully say is the best way to know about them is to go in a see for yourself. |

Hi. My husband surprised me with a yorkie puppy from Sportsmann Kennel just this past February. As soon as I saw her it was love at first sight, so at that time, I couldn't care less where she came from. However, now after the fact, when I looked into things, I would not purchase a dog from Sportsmann Kennel again. My yorkie girl was not akc registered and was taken away from her mother too soon. I was given the name of the breeder, who was from South Dakota, but there is no web site or any way to see pictures of her parents. My husband was told that she will grow no bigger than 6 pounds. But at 4 1/2 months old, she is already 5 pounds!!! My little girl will probably be a teapot. Anyways, she has been to the vet several times and checks out ok. My vet says she looks great, no health issues of any yet, and is very impressed by her disposition. She is extremely smart, very loving, has no bathroom accidents, and has learned many tricks already. So I consider myself very very lucky. But would not take that chance again!!! |
All I'm going to say to those that come on defending places like this. Even if you are legite and you say the place is clean, have you thought about where the pups come from or how the parents of the pups are living? A mill is a mill and as long as you support places like this, the greed, and abuse will continue. I guess some have no humanity Elaine |
the funny part about this is people are signing up with diff alias's and only posting once in this one thread! Greatness, no intent on integrating with the YT community..but they will give +rep to this business...sounds fishy! |
I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with Sportman's Kennel. All of my dogs have lived long healthy lives. The first dogs that I purchased there were Sophie a Yorkie and Tess, a Cavalier. They each were amazingly beautiful and lived to 15 and 17, respectively. My Yorkie Carly (pictured) also came from Sportman's Kennel. She will be 11 in June ... and is terrific in every way. All of my friends have gotten dogs from Hellen. My friend Ivy had a chocolate Poodle named Godiva that lived to 18, and in June she bought a black Pug from Sportman's Kennel, named Mabel. My friend Jane had a Dachshund named Lulu and Lulu just passed away at 19 years old!! Jane just got two gorgeous Dachshund from Helen, named Brownie and Cookie. My sister Dara got her Beagle, Eloise at Sportman's Kennel several years ago. Eloise is the cutest Beagle that I have ever seen. I have always found everyone at Sportman's Kennel to be highly professional. The place is very clean, and the puppy are all very well taken care of. Since I have a long history with the place, and have repeated friends and family members getting dogs there, I find this negative review hard to believe. The internet is very dangerous. People can post things like this ... and lies, half truths, and jealous competitors, sound like factual reliable sources. If I didn't have a history with Sportman's Kennel, I might take this at face value ... but because I do, I sincerely question how my experience could be so entirely different. Sportman's Kennel has been in business for over 40 years. Sorry, something just doesn't ring true!! |
If you google the facility you find nothing but complaints. I would understand one person having a problem...but there are many complaints out there. Do you work for them? |
@ Justin No, I do not work for them ... I work in television. As stated I've had only wonderful experiences, as have numerous people that I know. The place has been in business for like 30 or 40 years. I checked out their BBB rating, and it is excellent. As with any business, I'm sure there are occasional dissatisfied customers. And that is who usually posts things. It's rare that people like me decide to post our experiences. I'm not sure why the photo of my dog Carly has not appeared on my profile ... because you could see how beautiful my Sportsman's Kennel baby is. |

I am surprised that you work in TV and are so far behind the actual times... Educate yourself and do a Google Search for: Puppy Mills Because that is what you and people who buy from S Kennels are supporting. Your hard earned money that most people earn pay check to pay check are supporting the abuse and neglect that takes place in Puppy Mills... |
