| Question About Dog Tickets for Int. Flight Hello everyone, I was just wondering if anyone has ever purchased their ticket online for an international flight that they planned on taking their dog on & if so how do you get your dog's ticket if you do it this way to take him in cabin (some airlines allow this)? I plan on taking my dog to Italy with me for Christmas to visit my family, and I usually buy my ticket online. Since the flight will be with two different airlines (United and Lufthansa) will I have to buy him a ticket for each airline or would I just purchase it from United since that's who we'll be leaving with from the U.S. to Italy? However, the return flight will be entirely with Lufthansa . Approximately how much should I set aside for my fur baby's tickets? Sorry if these questions seem silly, but I've never flown with a dog before on an international flight. Thanks in advance! |

| I have not traveled internationally with my dogs, but here in the US I still book my flight on-line and call to reserve a place in-cabin for the dogs. Each airline has their own rules. Some do not allow in-cabin pets (Frontier), some airlines allow only 1 or 2 in the cabin at a time, most allow you only one pet per carry-on. You will probably have to buy a ticket for each separate airline. Domestic tickets for the dogs run anywhere from $50 (Delta) and up. I have traveled United several times and the charge for domestic animal travel in cabin is $85 each way. I think international travel is more. You can go to each airline's web page and look for the information. |

Here's what United's site says: Carry-on Fully weaned dogs or cats at least eight weeks old and domesticated household birds (canaries, finches, parakeets) can travel with you in the cabin if they are small enough to fit and stay comfortably in a kennel under the seat. Tropical birds such as parrots are not allowed. No pets in cabin allowed to Hawaii. (Exception: certified guide dogs) Fees The charge for pets that travel with you in the cabin is USD $85.00/CAD $101.00 within the U.S. and between the U.S. and Canada, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas. International rates vary by destination. The charge for shipping is $100 for small/medium size kennels and $200 for intermediate to extra large for domestic one way travel; international rates vary by destination. http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,51255,00.html For Lufthansa I believe they charge a 40 euro flat rate for a dog traveling in cabin to the U.S., but it's all so confusing Here are the links incase anyone cares to take a look at it and see what they understand. http://www.lufthansa.com/online/port...nodeid=1769643

| Good news! I called Lufthansa and they told me the flight would be $127 each way from Washington, D.C. to Catania, Sicily (Italy) and back (including United's portion of the flight). They said the dog will be allowed in-cabin for most of the flight. Yay Lufthansa! |

| What do they mean when they say the dog can stay in the cabin for "most" of the flight. What are you supposed to do with the dog the rest of the time? |

| I agree, I would ask what they mean by "most of the flight" You might have to take a hard crate with you or change flights. Make sure you carry on food and a water dish (water will have to be bought after you go through security), pee pads, and leash. If you have a dog with special medications, make sure you have them in airline approved containers. (I put Nutri-Cal into a clear bottle from Wal-Mart to be able to carry it on.) I would have the dog wearing a harness with ID on it. I would also make sure that the dog is microchipped. Take all of your health records with you. You may have to get a health certificate in Europe for the return flight (depends on how long they are good for, usually 30 day though) Schering Plough has these great booklets called health passports. They are just a record of all vaccinations and wormings. It also has a place for a picture of your pet and all contact information, microchip number. We use these for all of our dogs. This is the health record we send with our puppies to their new homes. These booklets are navy blue with a dog and cat on front. The item number on the back is SPAH-152R1. You should be able to get one free where Schering Plough vaccines are sold. |

After looking at my itinerary again I noticed that the short/domestic flights (about an hour long) say Lufthansa operated by Air One. So I went to Air One's website and I'm thinking since Air One only allows 2 pets in the cabin at one time & 4 more in the pressurized hold that there was no room left in cabin. I would love to have my little one with me at all times, but I'd rather have him with me on the international flight since it will be much longer. Anyway, I'm going to call Lufthansa again to clarify instead of assuming Does anyone know of a good hard crate that fits under the seat as well just incase? The dimensions Lufthansa gave is 22 x 16 x 18.

| Just giving an update I just got off the phone with both United and Lufthansa. They have room in-cabin on all flights so I made reservations for my doggy already and he will be with me in the plane the entire time. The price will be $105 each way (from U.S. to Italy and then Italy back to U.S.), and weight just has to be under 18 lbs (carrier included) and the dog must be in a carrier that will not leak (22L x 14W x 9H). Hope this is useful information to someone else as well |
