Car Travel I was wondering what you all do about traveling with your pup in the car? (even short distances) I would like to hold him on my lap, but it's dangerous in the sense that he is distracting to me and he also could be killed by the airbag if we were to ever get in an accident. I've looked at numerous options and I just don't know what to go with! |
I just got my little girl and she has already been on several car rides. She does best when I put her in her kennel in the passsenger seat, with the front facing me, so that she can see me. She cries if I face her towards the front of the car. Oh, and I buckle her kennel in with the seatbelt so it doesnt move around. |

We just went to Arkansas with 2 dogs and came back with 3. I used a small kennel for Baron because he jumps around too much. I did let him sit on my lap on pilliows in Tenn. for a bit. He fell asleep. I have 2 car seats so Sophie Kennedy and Sammy had those to sit/or lay down on. They're much calmer in the car than Baron. I seat belt both car seats and the small kennel for added safety. The dogs in the Car Seats wear padded harnesses too. :) |
I have a carrier bag that my tiny rides in but now Chloe doesn't want to ride in a carrier, she thinks she is grown now. She will sit on her blanket in the front seat. I hook her leash to the seat belt and Willow, in carrier, sits beside her. They both have to be next to me and be able to see me. When I am not driving they are on my lap. |
Anyone know of a specific carrier you recommend for your dog for car travel? |
we use a plastic cat kennel and secure it in place with the seatbelt through the handle. works really well until one of the kids decides he is "lonely" and "has" to come out of his kennel. :) |
Jackson sits/lays in the backseat, with a harness that attaches into the seatbelt. It actually buckles in the belt. :) He does absolutely great/fine in the car. |
George comes to work with me every day and he comes on deliveries etc, he has his own Outward hound car seat and his harness just hooks on, he has enough room to look out the window or have a sleep, he loves it. |
I HAVE to find something for Jemma. Nothing has worked. She will do anything to get out of the back seat, a crate, carrier, anything. As dangerous as it is, she sits on my lap. She doesn't move. She just looks out the window and if she even see's a cat, she won't move or go nuts. She doesn't distract me or anything. I just have to do/find something that will work for her for her own safety. I already tried treats, toys, even letting her howl for a week. Thought I'd go deaf. I finally stopped because I thought she was going to have a heart attack. So for now, she just sits on my lap and does nothing. Anyone who see's her at lights all smile and wave and think it's cute. It's really not. It's not safe for her. Can't figure it out. Carol and Jemma. |
1 Attachment(s) Bella has both a console and a backseat Snoozer Lookout car seat. She LOVES them!!!! She gets so excited about riding in the car now. This is her in her console Snoozer. I bought them at petco.com and got free shipping and I though a good price. I use the console one for short little trips and the backseat one for longer trips in the car. |
Just bought Owen one of the Snoozer car seats. Got a 10% off plus free shipping coupon for Petco on retailmenot.com! Hooray! I'll let you all know how it works out for us. |
1 Attachment(s) I don't know if you can see this pic or even tell what it is but we live on a bus and travel the country. Curly Mac HAS to either be on my lap, which is difficult for me with the giant steering wheel or in her carrier which is one of those "front packs" you wear. Only hers is hanging on my microphone next to the dashboard so she can look out the window or have a little snooze...as you can see here lol Attachment 278546. The blue part is the pack, the peace blanket is for her to lay her head on and you can almost see her little nose right inside the steering wheel. |
You are so right, it is very dangerous to have your pup on your lap or loose in the car. Here are two of my favorite car seats. I have a tiny little laundry type basket that I put her blanket into the bottom of it. She usually sits perched watching the cars next to me for awhile, but she'll settle in and curl up. Makes driving with her a breeze, and I don't have to worry about her getting thrown around or jumping off of my lap while I'm driving. Buckle the basket in, and we're set to go. |

I bought Patrick a snoozer seat, but he cries and shakes like he is being skinned alive. I have tried treats, 2 different car seats, crate, dog bed, blanket...he even cries when he is on my lap. He goes to work with me everyday and he still hates it. The only time he was calm in the car was when we rode with another woman and her puppy. Then he acted like we were sitting on the couch at home....unfortunately we can't take my friend's puppy with us everytime we go out :( What to do, what to do, what to do?...he is 16 weeks now and he runs away from me whenever he thinks it is time to go in the car. |

i asked this question to the dog trainer at petco yesterday & her reply was to put her in a crate or kennel. she said in case you wrecked it would protect them from the glass is windows broke & they'd be secure if the glass did break & couldn't get out. so guess instead of a car seat i'll be buying a bigger kennel! |
I considered the console seat first, because he has tried to stand on the console many times when we first get in the car. But I drive a Toyota Rav4 and the console dimensions are too small for the Snoozer console seat.:( |

Will I am usually always home...But I did go to walmart last month and took her with me my daughter drove and jada was in my lap the first thing i thought of going down the rode was the airbags that worried me ..I went in walmart and had my daughter to stay in the jeep with her...Later she brought her in walmart in her purse lol She owed me some money and she took that and bought a plastic carrier and had her in it I think its kinda small But I freaked out cause I thought she left her in the car...I think I will take it back and get one just a little bit bigger the seltbelt it to the backseat...The only think bad about that sshe couldn't see outside:animal-pa |
Are there any car seats that are high enough that a Yorkie can see out the windows?? |
The outward hound carseat has a blow up cushion in the bottom and it straps around the head rest,(adjustable straps) so it's high enough for George to see out the window of all my car and 4WD and I just hook his harness on, he can stand, up lay down, or just look gorgeous. |
My Rav4 console is only 13" L and 7" W, so the SUV console snoozer won't fit :(. I can only hope that once Patrick starts noticing things outside the car window that he will be contented to sit in his "Lookout Snoozer" and just enjoy the ride. *crosses fingers." |
Ellie has the Travellin Dog Car Seat. I wanted a console seat but inquired about its safety. The person I asked said it is better than nothing but the back seat is a better place. Just as a child's car seat wouldn't go in the front, the dog's seat probably shouldn't either. Kennels are okay but they would need to be buckled in or they could fly in an accident. The dog could also get thrown around depending on the size of the carrier. |
I just got back from a 2200 mile road trip with chester, he has a padded harness with a spot on the top that the seat belt goes through it. I do not use it all the time, when we are out on the open road with no traffic, he just lays down on the passenger seat. |

Yesterday I decided to give the Snoozer Lookout another try. Patrick had been so distressed a couple of weeks ago when I first put him in it, that I decided to remove it until he was old enough to appreciate the view outside the car. Well, he fussed a bit this time and continued to make soft whimpering noises, but after he noticed the people in a car beside us at the first stop light, he seemed to accept sitting in it. This morning when we got in the car he actually jumped into the Snoozer seat!! Dumbfounded with shock, I hooked him up without saying a word and although he continued to whimper and shake, he sat in the seat and looked out the window without a single attempt to climb out. HOOOOORAAAY!!! for the Lookout Snoozer Car seat!! |
