Computer Generated New Members
 
Several of us on the Welcoming committee have noticed a rapid increase of new members since Christmas. Use to be 30-40, now it seems like it's over 100 a day. Have that many new members really received Christmas pups? We were wondering if there could be computer generated new names going on. For example,

I could go on and on, but I guess you get the idea. I just thought admin should be aware of this, and maybe there is something you can do like having new members read a code or something before they join. Many sites make you read what looks like handwriting so that only a person could read it and not a computer.

Nancy, thanks for starting the thread about all the new profile pages with weird things on the bios. I think this might be computer generated, but not sure.

For me, I do not post a welcome if the zip code says "man" or repeats the user name, etc. It is obviously someone that has not taken the time to join and be interested. (That is what makes me think again that is computer generated.)

My explanation.... There is a group of us on YT that are welcoming Newbies and I think it is a warm thing to do. I call it the Nurture Committee (in a joking way) and call Nancy the chairperson. (Of course she hates that I call her that. :eek:)

You understood what I meant, I think. I joke with Nancy that we need to come up with a sarcasm font or a sarcasm app. There is no way to read something and know someone is joking. I was joking that I'm glad I didn't join the Welcoming committee, but I'm confused as to why anyone would want to make random computer generated sn's. Maybe spacing things wasn't enough to separate the 2 different thoughts?

Thanks for letting us know! There have been a few "spammers" lately. Anytime someone registers a username and has the "same" zip code, it's most likely a spammer I think.

The spammers just want to spam their web sites, either in their signatures or in posts.

Most probably won't cause any issues, but if you see a new member with a web site in their Home Page (which is under the Contact Info tab), they are definitely a spammer. So please let us know about those members and we can take care of it.

We've been pretty good at keeping spammers off of YorkieTalk, we did add another modification to the YorkieTalk forum software this past weekend, which will make it a bit harder for spammers to get on YT. Thanks!

Thanks for the explanation Admin. It has been odd that there has been such a huge amount of spam type of Newbies registering in the last few days. (So obviously, whatever you have been doing in the past has been working.)

Also, appreciate the information about the website link on their homepage and will report, if I see that.

Seriously, my all time favorite scammer, Newbie avatar was a pornographic cartoon picture. (Of course, Admin took care of that right away.) You just never know what is going to be posted in the wee hours of the morning.

Spammers are annoying. Usually, bc spammers post links - their posts sit in the Moderation queue - so then, we can delete the spam before it ever reaches the board, while at the same time banning the user immediately.

The members listed above do look like spammers to me - but it's odd that they don't have some sort of spam link in their 'contact info' tab. Perhaps they will throw out a link if/when one of them posts...at which time we can ban them.

I'm open to banning them immediately (based upon the user name/zip code parameter), but want to wait to hear what Admin says as to whether we should wait until they actually try to spam (?).

That could be a great idea. I can almost tell (about 95% of the time) lately, if the Newbie is a spammer, by the name that is chosen for the user name. It is interesting because there are consonants and vowels and this can be sounded out, but it is nonsense. (Example: lennocka) Wonder if this is a person doing this or a computer program?

Also, have to add that I learned a new word today, Ann. :) (Thanks to you.) I had no idea what queue meant or even how to pronounce it, so I looked it up. Learn something new everyday on here.

That's what I wanted to know as well, I've got another group of listings that I believe are computer generated, and I hate for admin to get redundant PM's and if they were listed here, I could check other people's lists.
