Simon Has A Corneal Ulceration :( I thought he had allergies and today when we woke up his eye was swollen so I took him to the vet this afternoon. He has a bad corneal ulceration and I feel horrible! The vet said it was still superficial and should heal with medication. He also said he was glad I didn't wait any longer. I have to give him an antibiotic ointment once a day and antibiotic drops every hour until I go to work tomorrow then when I come home for lunch then every hour until I work on Wed. This goes on until we go back to the vet Thursday afternoon. He also had to have all the hair shaved from around his eye and has to wear a cone if he starts to mess with his eye. I feel so bad, I really didn't think it would be this bad. I thought it was watery and itchy just from allergies. I feel like a bad mom~I'm going to try to take tomorrow afternoon off work too so I can be home. |
awww, poor Simon . . . . so with medication this will completely heal? I hope so . . . . Annika and Tiger sends warm hugs :) |
You're not a bad mom...Anyone could have thought it was allergies! Poor Simon!! Does it look like it hurts? I hope it heals really quickly!! |
The vet wants to see improvement from the meds on Thursday when we go back. He said it was still superficial so that is good news. It really does look painful especially today and after his hair was shaved. It's very red and swollen but wouldn't you know that little rascal is still playing ball and barking at squirrels!! |
Thank goodness it was superficial!! I'm sure his eye will heal fast, and Simon never skips a beat does he? LOL :) |
Poor little Simon. I had tears in my eyes reading this. Do you have to do the drops at night. If you do, you are going to be one tired little puppy until Thursday is over. |

Bad mom? You're nuts! You saved the day getting him there so quickly. Does the vet think it's an injury, or is it something else? |
Bad mommy? Until someone starts making a bubble suit that we can fill with a wee bit of helium to soften their falls------accidents happen. I cringe everytime Milo goes flying off the back of the couch..........and no, Pete Doherty is not one of his buddies.:p |
oh poor Simon and poor mommy.... i know how horrible you must feel! i would too!! but just be glad you got him in when you did! you'd feel even worse if you waited!!! and now it will go away quickly and hopefully his pain will be gone soon! oh and i wish you ALL the best getting those eye drops in... i don't think i can imagine anything more difficult... it is hard enough to get meds in Layla's mouth i can't imagine her eyes!! how is that going??? :p I hope he doesn't have to put that stupid cone on!!! he a good boy simon and DON"T SCRATCH!!! Keep us posted! any idea what cuases something like that?? like sand in the eye or something??/ |
Oh no! You are a VERY good Mommy getting there so fast. Fingers crossed it goes away really soon :( |
You're not a bad mom!!! You love your Simon and did well to get him in to the vet as soon as you saw something wasn't right. It's good that it's superficial, it will heal faster. Sending kisses and hugs to you Simon, get better!!! |
Poor baby. I am glad your vet says the medicine will clear it up. Hopefully Simon wont have to wear a cone |
OK I just got the first round of drops in and WOW what a fight I had. My arms are bleeding from scratches and I finally had to put him in a headlock between my eyes to get 1 drop in. It took 20 min!! My neighbor is going to help me when she gets home, do you think she will be available from 11pm-7am tomorrow? I don't care though, as long as the monkey starts getting better. That's all that matters |
You're a wonderful Mommy! I'll bet Simon didn't know WHAT was happening when you put the eye drops in:p I'll be thinking about Simon (and you) and hoping he's MUCH better Thursday. |
Sending get well wishes and hugs to poor little Simon :) |
Poor baby, My first Yorkie had that and his was real bad but it cleared up with the drops and ointment. When I had to put drops in eyes I gently grab their topnot or hair and hold their head still. I do the same to trim around their eyes. They don't try and fight me and they are in no way hurt. |
Your definitely not a bad mommy...don't even think that one. You caught it and took Simon in and that's all that matters. Now mommy has boo-boos, too. :( Battle scars! Good luck tomorrow - man he'll start runnin when he sees that eye drop bottle coming ....you better be a sneaky mom and hide is as you go get him. |
Aww, poor Simon!! I hope he gets better soon!! You are certainly not a bad mommy, don't even think it for one second!! I hope he does better for you next time you put the drops in. Scampers freaked out the first time I had to put some eye drops in his eye but he got use to it and started letting me do it without putting up a fight. |
don't ya hate it when they fight you like this!!! the little monkeys - c'mon simon, mommy's only trying to help you get well again!!! :hands: :hands: for little simon's eye to heal so he can go back to being the soccer KING again!!! |
Ahhh Hugs to simon and to you:) you are a very good mommy:) |
wrap him in a towel Poor baby, what causes this? Wrap him in a towel when you put the drops in that way he cant struggle as much. |
awww get better soon Simon...... How is doing ???? |

I would like to know what causes this also. I'm constantly worried Stella is going to get an eye infection because she's a little sneaky and we have a horrible time keeping her hair up and out of her face. Now she just scampers behind the sofa and is majorly talented using her paw to pull it down. |
Oh I'm sorry poor baby and poor mommy. Big hugs. You are a great mommy, don't ever question that. |
A TOWEL!!! What a great idea. I've been through 2 rounds with Simon so far and I'm taking quite a beating. I'm going to try the towel, thank you for the idea! They can be caused by numerous things but most often trauma. Dr. Burns asked me some odd questions such as had I been around smoking, had Simon gotten gravel in his eye, been in a fight, but I answered no to all of those. I read this earlier about it: http://www.petplace.com/dogs/corneal...ogs/page1.aspx Thank you all for the well wishes. I hope he starts to not fight as much, I have to do these drops all night long and tomorrow :( |
What a drag. I definitely feel for you. The towel sounds like a good idea. I wonder if you can sneak up on him when he's sleeping and drop some in? Does Simon sleep? I'm sure you've tried everything, but talk softly to him when you're doing it and give him a lot of good boys. You might even try treats for when he behaves. I just watched a video on grooming, and that's what they recommended anyway. You're a good mom for persisting! It's gotta be done. |
Praying that the medication works by Thursday that you take him again. Thank God you caught it on time! |
