Our Newman - very bad news. We just got back from our vet. Newman's tumor is back. Radiation is not an option for him. He would have to lie on his back sedated three to four times a week due to the location of the tumor. Newman cannot lie on his back due to a collapsed trachea. He's unable to breath that way. Also, the radiation would only prolong until the tumor came back. It would not cure it. We spoke about amputation and he's going to call the oncology dept. and see what the odds are if we amputate. He told us that within a week the foot would ulcerate and become a real mess and he would be in severe pain. At this point he's reccomending that it would prob. be best to put him down. We are such a mess. He's been our baby for ten years. We had him operated on in March and the tumor was removed and we were given about about a year with him before it would come back. It's only been four months and it's come back very aggressivly. It's a rare tumor that our vet has never seen. He's one of the best and has been around a long time. He did research on it and spoke to other specialists too and they have never seen a case like this. Please keep my baby in your thoughts. Elaine |

My thoughts are with you Elaine. This is one of the most difficult decisions to make and it does come with a price. You will feel devastated, however, knowning that Newman will not have to go through severe pain will help guide to that place of decision. When Sophie was so ill, I knew she had to pts, but couldn't sign the papers the first time. Sobbed for days before, couln't sleep, sobbed in the vet's office and we decided it wasn't the right time for me although I believe Sophie was ready. A few weeks later, she had tried to stay alive for me (I kept hoping she would just die in her sleep). The vet told me we all wish they could just close their eyes, drift to heaven but it usually doesn't happen, and we have to help them cross the bridge. On January 23, I knew clearly that I needed to help sweet Sophie. I can still remember her eyes, almost pleading with me. Thinking about those moments in time, I know this is painful for you. Listen carefully to Newman because he will help you make the decision. Bless you and there is no magic answer. Warmly, Deborah |
