| bad skin allergies My yorkie is having really bad skin allergies. She has really bad bumps all over her, her skin is pink, and her hair is falling out (dont know if its from scratching so much or what). I took her to the vet for this before and they gave her a cortizone shot.. but I'm afraid to keep doing that, as I know it can have bad effects later. I do give her benadryl, and it seemed to help a little until now. We just noticed that it was really bad yesterday. We have a vet appointment for Monday, but since its the weekend. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do for her in the meantime to relieve her itching?

| Have you tried changing her food? What about her shampoo? We switched to a non fragrance laundry soap for my son's allergies; it has helped his sleeping at night, but we figured it was better for Bailey's bedding also. Try putting her on a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days (2 parts rice to 1 part chicken) Our dog is 5lbs and I give her 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup in the evening & see if there are any changes in her skin. My friend has Chihauas and one of them is allergic to dust mites so she has to vacume and dust quite often, she also washes their bedding in hot water using non fragrance laundry soap. I would just try a few different things until you figure out what her allergy trigger is. I get kenalog shots for my allergies every 3 mo, and have been for years. Do you have a natural pathic vet around you? My mom swears by them for her 3 bengal cats. Good Luck! Michele & Bailey |

| I was just talking to my stepmom and she was telling me her sister's dog kept breaking out with allergies and they finally found she was allergic to her flea medicine, fleas didn't dawn on me because we don't have them here in Nevada. I hope she is feeling better. Michele & Bailey |

| Hi, my peke has bad allergies. He would always bite like crazy and lick his paws so much that I was going nuts. Not sure what your feeding him but I switched mine to Nutro Lamb and Rice and after 2 months I saw a huge difference. Also, if your baby isn't having problems with fleas then maybe you could skip the meds and try something wth true Lavendar oil in it or buy the oil and add it to the shampoo. It helps to repeal fleas. I only suggest this if fleas aren't really an issue. Also, beyondbeds.com carries some products that are natural. Maybe something with oatmeal from them could help. My little Snoot still itches but not nearly as bad. Hope your baby and you find something soon. Good Luck

| I agree about finding a holistic vet, there are a lot of herbal remedies a regular vet is not going to know about and all of them are much safer than steroids (like predisone) which have a lot of side effects and long term health problems associated with them. Until you can find out the cause, these might help relieve the itching Try pure colloidal (colloidal just means ground fine) oatmeal. It's important to leave it on at least 10 minutes and not use hot water. Here's a link. http://www.acnetohealth.com/general2.html Also here's another link about other itch remedies - Have your tried 100% Aloe Vera? http://www.homestead.com/bulldogsworld/ItchySkin.html |

| I would experiment with foods. Just keep in mind, it can take up to four weeks for skin to improve with the right food. Also, Aveeno oatmeal baths can be very soothing. We finally had Ginger tested...poor girls allergic to nearly every meat source (fish is ok) AND her brother the cat. We switched her food and continued with the benedryl and oatmeal baths. I actually shaved her little body down afer months of growing her hair out so that I could bathe her less and use the oatmeal more. After about 6 weeks on the new food, her skin cleared up and I've stopped using the benedryl everyday. Her eyes still seep a lot, but that may be the cat. Hang in there, when you figure out what's causing it and remove it, you'll see a huge improvement.
